Do you think the Kings would demand a first rounder? What leverage do they have? Do the Bobcats have a TE?

I think if Bonzi was going to deal with the Bobcats, a SnT is not going to be necessary.

Agreed with "different" doesn't always mean "better." But, at this rate, let's see if we can't at least increase the talent level on the "win now" mode team. Bonzi would be our bonafide starting 2. As far as the whole "clogging up the middle" argument people seem to have, with Battier at the 4 (more of a perimeter threat than post), how much is this going to effect Yao? Not much at all. And I do think Battier is starting at the 4 for us with JH coming off the bench, T-Mac seemed to agree in some early interviews...

The Bobcats are way under the cap. However, I doubt that Wells wants to play there, if he can get "enough to feed his kids," from the Rocks. The Kings leverage, such as it is, would be allowing the Rocks to offer more money via the TE. For that, we give them something. Hopefully, not a 1st rounder. I'd like to get Wells. I'm just leery of giving more than a 2nd for the privilege. Maybe if it were protected. If it's all about the money, then the ball in in the Bobcats' court.

I don't agree. The Bird Rights were accumulated in the original MEM/SAC contract. Not taking the 2007-08 player option IMHO does not negate the fact that Wells has been on a successive contract(s) without changing teams (as a Free Agent) for 3+ years. The Rockets have Wells' Full Bird Rights if he opts out. Stated another way, opting out of the future does not alter the past. 3 year contract + 1 year contract without changing teams as a Free Agent.

From the Rockets' perspective, it's win-win. If he (dumbly) takes the option,he's making less than the MLE. If he opts out, you pay next years' market value if you want to and you can better anyones MLE.

I think the real question is what leverage do we have? The Kings are in a position that if Wells wants to make more than what the Rockets/Nugs/Heat can offer, they will have to deal with them.

Unless Wells wants to play for the Cats or make 2.1M (which I doubt he would want either), the only other option is a S&T with the Kings.

As for giving up a 1st Rounder, I'd do it. Hopefully we won't be picking in the lottery anytime soon so a mid to late 1st rounder for an established player wouldn't be too bad, considering we gave up a Top 10 pick for a lesser player IMO.

I think it's more than 27M for 5 year contract.

you can trade within 15% + 100K so you can sign him for more than the 4.2TE which is.

    4.9, 5.4, 6.1, 6.9, 7.8 = 31M

    for 6 years it could be 4.9, 5.4, 6.1, 6.9, 7.8 + 8.7=40M

If you believe ESPN, next summer their will be only 2 teams far enough under the cap to afford a max contract or near max contract type player and they are Charlotte and Memphis. And with players like Vince Carter, Mike Bibby, Rashard lewis, Chauncey Billups, Atawn Jamison, etc. in the open market you can bet most of the rest of the free agents will be lucky to get more than MLE type money. Sacramento was Bonzi's best bet to get the most money and he blew it.

So now unless he has a sensational season, it is doubtful he will be offered more than MLE money next season. I think his new agent has explained the reality of next years market to him. Which leaves Bonzi with the option of signing with the Rockets 4.2 mil TE and then opting out and taking the Rockets full MLE for 5 years. It is a risk in that he could as easily take another teams MLE but the advantage of signing with the Rockets as opposed to some other team is we are IMHO legitimate championship contenders. Not to mention the fact that we have no state tax.

So unless Charlotte comes knocking on the door very quickly with more money (very doubtful as more money to Bonzi is less money available to acquire younger talented free agents with less baggage) than I think the Rockets chances look good.

Nope the trade exception does not work like a regular sign and trade deal. You can only take a player with an increase of $100,000 more than the TE. Which mean his 1st year can start at only 4.3 mil. That is significantly lower than the MLE which could be at 5.5 mil next season.

But I remember something about the payrate expontentially increasing every year of a TE contract, from the Mike James threads, anyone?

Can we do a SnT where we give him that 4.3 mil this first yr and then the full MLE next yr?

    Yes you can.

This from is from Larry Coon's Site which should explain it better...

Sign and trade contracts must be for three years or longer, but only the first season of the contract must be guaranteed. The three year minimum (even though the last two seasons may be non-guaranteed) ensures that the new team will not acquire Bird rights to the player any sooner than if they had signed him directly, because if they want to give him a new contract using Bird rights then they have to waive him first, which resets the Bird clock.

My interpretation is that a contract can have either a player or team option. And if if either opts out it is as if the contract has been waived and they are a free agent. So if Bonzi signs a 3 year deal but opts out after the first year then he can resign with the Rockets under their MLE if both parties agree. Of course he is also free to sign with any other team as well. But as I said before it is highly unlikely he will get more than MLE offers unless he has a sensational year.

Oh by the way this seems to contradict Gater's statement of retaining bird rights after opting out. It seems opting out is like renouncing your contract and thus resets the Bird Clock. Of course that is my interpretation of Coon's interpretation and not the Last Word.

If that is so, then why give him the TE at all. Just give him the $2.1 million.

For discussion, let's say you are correct and I am wrong. The Rockets do not necessarily have to use the MLE on Wells. They can offer him a non-Bird Rights contract which is 120% of prior salary. 120% * $4.3M = $5.2M. That's comparable to MLE $ and it may be worthwhile to Wells if he likes the Rockets.

What about teams with 10mil is cap space? I doubt Bonzi is expecting to land a max contract, just one similar to the 8mil/yr he had before. And I find it very hard to believe that Atlanta and Orlando will have less capspace than Memphis. They don't even have a contract as big as Gasol's, nor secondary contracts like Mike Miller and Stro's. Orlando should definitely be able to afford him. And that's just two teams off the top of my head.

Why give him 2.1 mil why not just give him the vet minimum. Of course it would benefit the Rockets to give Bonzi less but do you really think Bonzi is having it? In spite of what others might believe 2.2 mil is still alot of money to Bonzi and I am sure he wants it if he can get it. Of course if Sacramento refuses a sign and trade then he may be forced to consider the remainder of our MLE but at this point I think he expects the Rockets to attempt to give him he full TE if they want him. Now you might say beggars can't be choosy. And the Rockets could play hardball and say that we are only going to offer you the rest of our MLE but if they really want him than I would say that would be a bad move. If they don't really want him than just offer him the vet minimum and say show us what you got and we will give you more later. It's not likely he will buy into that.

I think when he said "it's in the Rockets hands and this deal could be done in 48 hours" is he know the Rockets can offer a starting contract for 4.3 mil and he is ready to accept that. So Rockets make the deal happen with Sac and I am yours for the bargain basement price. Bonzi has already made it clear he is about the money and 4.3 is the best he thinks he can get after he royally screwed up. And 4.3 is what he wants. If he has to settle for less he probably will. But 2.1 is almost low enough to consider playing in europe 1 year. Not saying he would just saying he wants the rockets TE that's why he talked to them first after he realized his dilemna.

Now, I have not followed Bozi situation for a while. I know he turned down Sac's offer, but come on now, nobody is willing to sign this guy for more than 2.1 M? Is there something wrong with him? He was the main fire power in Portland not long ago and played well in last year offseason. Why no teams want him for more than we can offer???
