a lot of the push in oil prices is from speculative buyers right? wouldn't removing the ban immediately cause barrell prices to tumble? just like if some person found a way to slowly but cheaply manufacture gold, wouldn't that cause speculative gold buyers to start selling off?

I'm not sure about other areas, but there is considerable oil seepage off the coast of Santa Barbara already. Drilling might actually improve the local maritime environment. Of course, if one is against oil production and use in general, then that is something else.

Compassion should always be a factor in formulation of public policy. Carrying out the logic of your opinions, you would cut out educational aid to the poor, social programs of all kinds, etc. etc. Yeah, tough luck -- learn to be smarter, richer and healthier.

Otherwise, your logic supports cutting off grain giveaways to the hungry of the world. Of course, I think we should do that anyway and use that food to feed our own homeless and hungry first, but we covered that in another thread some time ago.

Personally, the price of gasoline doesn't affect me. My total mileage so far this year is under 4,000 miles. I could laugh at $10 per gallon and preach how you should conserve like me. I office at home and everything I need from stores to medical care to banks is no farther than 1.7 miles from me.

However, the price of fuel affects freight prices, which is my concern. It affects my neighbors, which is my concern. It affects the health and well-being of my country, which is my concern.
