So you'd prefer no healthcare reform over some healthcare reform?

Healthcare is Barack Obama and the Democrat's 'signature' issue.

Yes, we know. That's pretty irrelevant to what I posted or was replying to.

The title of the thread is misleading; there has been no confirmation that the public option has been dropped from the senate bill. We will not know full details until the CBO scores the new bill and that will take a few days. Reid insists that there is a public option in the bill and by all indications it looks like there will be.

Reid's office subsequently released a written statement on the compromise:

Call him what you will, it doesn’t change the fact that a Public Option is still in play and your assertion that it has been dropped is wrong

Mojoman is right that this issue is all on the Democrats and if it fails it will be considered a Democractic failure. That is one reason why the Republicans are so eager to see it fail. A 60 vote caucus in the Senate is rare and if the Democrats can't get legislation passed with that size caucus it is their fault.

And your evidence that Reid is lying in this case is?

    From the Wall Street Journal:

Of course, to be fair, I have some questions about the bolded sections. For example, are the contents of the "low cost national health plan" specified in the legislation, or are they left up to the Office of Personnel Management to determine later? If it is the latter, I do not believe this bill will pass in the Senate. Also, are the insurance companies free to set their own prices on this plan? Once again, if the answer is no, I do not expect this plan will pass. These are important questions that remain unanswered at this point.

I wonder how many lives are worth a partisan touchdown? I wondered the same thing with Iraq and a good many other issues. History, in America and elsewhere, would suggest a great many lives.

Another interesting proposal coming out of negotiations is that insurance companies would be required to spend 90% of premiums on medical services and not keep as profits.

    That’s kind of cool

You didn't even come CLOSE to answering his question.

Look, I'm somewhat opposed to the public option, but SOME type of reform NEEDS to happen.

I have insurance and I'm saying this. For those opponents of any healthcare reform who are currently insured...your view will change when you hear the three magic words that carriers love to use to deny claims..."Pre-Existing Condition"

Your view will probably also change if you ever actually have serious medical work done. It's no fun dealing with your insurance company, or evaluating the costs. Both my wife and I had to go to the hospital this year and I can't imagine anyone making less than 50k affording this stuff. And I have really good insurance (relatively speaking).

Ditto. As I've said before, if you're happy with your current insurance you probably haven't had to use it.
