that's the big reason why Hillary won't run in 2004. She knows bush would slaughter her. In 2008 her chances improve but i think she'll still lose.

I agree, the only reason I could see it being successful would be if, once the Clinton hate machine gets dusted off, oiled up, and pumping again, she scores a bunch of sympathy/backlash points.

I don't thik either is likely though.

This is an excellent article, I was gonna post it one of these days.

I like this - "Sociologist David Riesman suggested there are broadly two kinds of political people. Gyroscopic people have internal guidance systems. Radar people steer according to signals bounced off others. Today, Democrats are more a radar party, Republicans are more a gyroscopic, and stronger."

If I were a Democrat, and I thought Hillary had no chance, then I would REALLY feel bad about my party. She outpolls every other Democrat by miles.

PS Democrats should feel bad about their party. You guys are in complete disarray. The recent push to brand Bush as a liar is one of the worst strategic political movements I have ever seen. Middle America, the swing voters, are going to make the Democrat Party pay for this tactic, and the makeup of Congress will be the site for retribution.

She would definitely win the nomination. And then she would most likely lose.

She is sort of continuing the Clinton legacy. Bill kept winning the White House as the rest of the Democratic Party kept losing. Overall they haven't been very good for the Democratic Party (or their friends who are involved in scandals).

...but Max, most Americans agree that Clinton should have been impeached, and most Americans thought he shouldn't have been convicted.

A clear majority of Americans, over 3/4 in some polls, think taking out Saddam was the right thing to do, and that Bush was honest in his intentions.

    The two situations don't compare.

Middle America? F-ck the Wal-Mart crowd, as if we need them.

Eventually, people will wake up to the fact that nutty ideologues like Tom DeLay run the Republican party. I just hope that not too much damage is done in the meantime. Until then, keep overreaching boys.

LMAO! Max, there is your overconfidence.

If only Hillary could adopt "f-ck the Walmart crowd" as her slogan. We would never have to worry about the Democrats again.

Why do you and Heathy and other republicans still fantasize about Hilary running? Is it to exorcise the demons of not being able to bring down Bill despite breaking out every dirry trick in the book?

    Let it go.

Until then, you and Maureen Down can daydream of Hilary's campaign.

Sam, you are so out of touch with political reality I can only smile and shrug my shoulders.

I was kidding. But honestly, f-ck wal-mart. If they ever built one in Manhattan I think I will jump off the Brooklyn Bridge. They already built freaking Outback and Olive Garden here...

I would interpret it more as the Republican party in recent years has tended to paint everything in simplistic, black and white terms and the Democratic party has been more open minded party receptive to new ideas. It's much easier to get closed minded zealots working together than a bunch of free thinking hippies with wildly diverging agendas.

    You hate the Olive Garden?

    Finally, we agree on something.

Actually I don't care. I was just trying to jump into the conversation and make a distinction between "viable candidate" and "electable." I think those are 2 different things.

I don't like Bill and Hillary, but I don't hate them like a lot of the people on the right do. Bill passed welfare reform, didn't raise taxes much, and got the balanced budget. That's not bad.

I think Hillary's ability to win in 2008 totally depends on who the Reps throw out that year. I'm not hearing anything about possible Republican candidates in 2008. Do you guys know of any possible Republican candidates preparing for the 2008 run?

I haven't heard of anyone outside of Rice...

My whole feeling on the issue is pretty simple, anybody but Bush in 2004. If I get to be picky, I would rather NOT have Hillary. I think she is very devisive. She wears her superiority complex on her sleeve.
What the Dems need is for someone to come out and say what they THINK, and not what they think PEOPLE WANT TO HEAR. Al Gore outside of running for an election is a MUCH more viable candidate than Al Gore coached by advisors. Same goes for Bob Dole. And Bill Bradley. And damn near anybody else, except W.
The Democrats need to start to listening, believe it or not, to political satirists. People that can come up with easy to remember sound bites that people can express to convey their frustration in this administration. Another Bush, Another Recession. That type of thing.
I think we all realize that a large majority of Americans are middle of the road, swing voters. Their attention has to be captured in order to vote. Am I saying that Americans are stupid? NO. What I am saying is that apathy is very strong in this society and that people are more turned off by the drawn out horse race type elections that we currently use.
If you are a democrat and you want Bush gone like I do, it's time to talk amongst your friends about your frustrations. We can win. We won the majority last time. It can be done.

I would love to see Rice vs. Hillary in 2008.

It would be good for the country for so many reasons.
