Completely agree but playing islamic terror whack-a-mole works better if you actually try to hit them.

I agree with respect to a single attack but like ATW described the cancer it is better to catch early instead of dismiss the lump entirely. And I disagree completely with your analogy.
Unless 5 or 6 posters have been banned it is only a matter of time.

The US didn't abandon Iraq. They were asked by Iraq's democratically-elected government to leave.

The point is, you can defeat armies, and you can pass every law you want, but you can't control what a handful of motivated sociopaths do.

I predict that it will only take a few hours before Mossad and CIA are blamed - if not here, then on Muslim mailing lists and social media.

Look at almost every war ever....that's how it happens.

Right and that was like adults listening to an infant telling them to leave it in a hot car with the windows up for the afternoon.....they should have known better.

Nothing would please me more than to see the world's petrobarons lose their free pass to sodomize the world but that won't happen in our lifetimes, and only one major economy (Germany) seems committed to losing their dependence on oil.

The House of Saud have a very special relationship with the UK and have pumped on demand when economists have whined about oil prices. Venezuela, Nigeria, and Iran don't listen to the West or have the same considerations. I think it's existential necessity for all but a handful of luddites that they are courted the way they are.

Sure, but even in a post-carbon world economy, there were still be nutters of God determined to fight for a magical world that won't come. Refusing to respect sectarian messianic superstitious nonsense is something that can be done now. Right now.

So you invade a country for not respecting international law...and stay because you don't respect international law. Makes sense.

It certainly makes more sense than setting them up for failure.....and then having to go back later. It was short sighted and we are paying for it now.

It would make you a criminal regime, in violation of several treaties the US is a signatory to, and Article VI of the Constitution which makes them binding by American law.

It will happen in our lifetimes (assuming you're about the same age as me). There are very smart people working on this problem and despite my inherent cynicism, I tend to believe in the scienticts and engineers who are driving the wheel forward on this.

(no faith for the politicians though)

It doesn't even matter whether or not the countries listen to one another. Hell, even now people are buying ISIS oil--somebody has to be a consumer right? The extreme dependance on oil means the US is funding Venezuala (25 million barrels a month), Russia (10 million barrels a month) and of course the Sauds, despite themselves or any stated political relations.

Does Saudi Arabia or anybody else need to be "courted" like that? Not in a post-carbon world economy.

The difference is those nutters won't command attention or money. I don't know how else you can refuse to respect the nonsense present in some religious interpretations beyond demonstrating the superiority of innovation and technology to supersede all problems.

Much as you don't think we can transition out of a carbon economy, I don't think we can wave a magic wand and say "stop respecting all of your deeply-held beliefs" and have any effect.

Then maybe there shouldn't have been a war in the first place.

Well you wouldn't just have to tell them to piss off, you could have worked out something diplomatically if the president wanted that done. He campaigned on abandoning Iraq.....so it's pretty clear that he had no interest in working out a deal to stay.

Of course you probably know that.

They just mentioned Mr. Obama having said "it's contained" today on CNN (not Fox News). I don't think it's wrong to point out that saying that on the day of a huge terror attack by ISIS proves him wrong. It certainly does not warrant mc mark's primitive attacks.

I'm not waving a magic wand, I'm demanding that we not abandon the secularism and humanism of the Enlightenment, which is inclusive not only of the technological innovation you respect, but the scientific inquiry that's undermined by all of God's nutters, from meek to murderous.

It's the self-destructive idea that divine revelation can be accepted as a counter-point to science and the humanities that keeps human civilization from having nice things.

The agreement, if I'm not mistaken, was made before he was elected. While I don't think Obama can be blamed by his haters for not continuing the war for perpetuity, he also cannot be congratulated by his earnest supporters for ending it, either.

I think it's pretty clear based on the context of his remarks that he was referring to the geographic areas that ISIS lays claim to.

It's silly to believe or suggest you can "contain" everyone belonging to a world-wide terror network.
