i believe that the President should get most of the blame or praise for the Federal deficit.

despite having a "not-so-accommodating " Rep-controlled congress, Clinton was able to generate a budget deficit by his 3rd yr in office. and he proceed to accumulated a huge surplus during his 2nd term.

w a Rep-controlled congress, Dubya ( in 7 months) pissed away the huge surplus he had intereited from Clinton. Dubya and the Rep-controlled spent US taxpayer's $$$ like dunken sailors.

it is just full of holes, suppositions built upon suppositions.

the book raises questions whether the authors understand taxation

the parents of several of my friends are immigrants from the EU nations, the home of the national sales tax system. while they are not enamored w the the current US tax system, having lived thru the VAT system, they all agree that the national sales tax approach is much worst.

There has been so much hype and spin surrounding this book, that the avg ameicans (who are not tax professionals) have shown to be easy preys for this hype, thinking that it is panacea, the cure-all to end all. an eg

A national sales tax system would hurt the economy because it would be an incentive for people not to buy new products, but to buy used items instead (garage sales etc.) to avoid the huge tax.
    • No market for new products means no innovation, which means the country cannot compete successfully in the global market. it was not a coincidence that the Internet, was successfully lanuched in the US and not in the VAT-nation in which the inventor lived.
Under a national sales tax system, there would be
    • Immediate criminal element in all retailing. Can you say "black markets"?!
    • Endless companies would be lobbying for their product to be (sales) tax exempt or at a reduced tax because it is environmentally friendly, etc. In short, we would end up with a complicated sales tax code similar to the current IRS tax code
    • We might end up having to carry "tax I.D. cards" because sooner or later the politicians would decide that poor people should pay at a lower rate and maybe rich people would pay at a higher rate.
    • We would need to keep records of how much sales tax we pay – to make sure someone who is making > $200,000.00 a year is not paying only $500 in sales tax and thus must be "cheating" by buying things in the new black market or whatever.
    • Government regulations would be overwhelming. The government would be prying into inventory books, garage-sale records    , lemonade stands, as well as tracking all goods to make sure the tax is paid. TVs and other high dollar items might have to include microchips to track them to make sure the tax gets paid.

Four posts in a row? Dude, we get it, you don't like the idea of a national sales tax.

I'm not going to fight you point by point, but you obviously haven't read the book or the bill because you misrepresent it completely. You've only read some article that runs down a strawman version of the proposal. Do yourself a favor and read it. You might surprise yourself and like something about it. Right now, your record is stuck in the lie groove.

if you know what you're talking about, you'd be more than happy to debate me point by point.

You aren't "debating," but simply repeating the same straw men over and over again. That is why I stopped posting in this thread, you obviously don't have the ability to analyze information.
