Most of the trust fund baby drug addicts I knew in college found it very easy to go underground and hide from just about everyone.

    This is good news.

I've been fearing for my safety lately, and would feel much more comfortable if I knew that Dubya Bush's capable and intelligent daughters were defending the borders of Texas from an Iraqi invasion. Historically, it's a good idea - when Dubya was defending Texas to prevent a Vietnamese invasion, he was highly successful.

It's almost difficult to respond to this one, seeing all of the moronic responses here already (with a few good ones thorwn in by bama and Deckard), but I just can't pass it up.

Reinstating the draft would be about the dumbest thing we could possibly do to the military. If you want to wreck the military, the Army in particular, then reinstate the draft.

The military as it currently stands is an all-volunteer, professional fighting force. The members who serve are professionals, because for most of them it is a career, not just a temporary obligation that they have to make it through. Ask anyone above the rank of E-5 if they think bringing back the draft is a great idea. Then ask them why not.

They will tell you essentially wehat bama told you - that the military today is too high-tech, too complex, and too sophisticated for a bunch of 2-year soldiers who don't want to be there to handle. What we have today is a force of fairly well educated, career-minded professionals who train constantly because they want to be good at their jobs, as opposed to a bunch of pot-smoking beerhogs who try to avoid training and duty at all costs because "They didn't sign up for this sh*t".

Draft armies give you Vietnam. Professional volunteer armies give you Desert Storms.

And as for this garbage about "Well, they are just bringing it up so the elites won't be so ready to send their kids off to war", that is a load of crap. The military has done several studies to see if the poor, minorities, and lower classes are overrepresented in their ranks, and they have consistently found the poor and minorities are *underrepresented* in the military, with the middle and even upper classes making up disproportionately large numbers of enlisted and officers. That whole "Whitey (Bush) sending a black (or poor) man to fight a white man's (Bush's again) war" argument is a load of propagandistic crap with no basis in reality. It is something that only a person who has never served would think. Or a Democrat.

My father is rich by any standards. He even works in the oil industry - making him the Devil incarnate to you Democrats... And look where I am.

I'm about to get another deployment, BTW. So to your enjoyment, pretty soon I won't be posting too much for a while.

I just wonder, are these Dems just going to keep bringing this up periodically for no reason but to get their names in the news?
    Treeman,
Stay safe and good luck. You are doing a great thing for America and we all should be thanking you. I am. Godspeed.:)

Go to Defense Link (http://www.defenselink.mil - probably in publications archives) and search for it. I don't have the time to sift through thousands of documents looking for three year old studies just to educate you, so you can either look for them yourself (I know at least one was done about three years ago, so that should help), choose to believe me, or choose not to believe me. Up to you, I really don't care.

I will say this: my unit is overwhelmingly white and hispanic, with most of its members coming from middle-class backgrounds, with a few upper class and a few lower class. That is my personal experience.

Thanks bama. I think it's just to keep themselves in the news... No one seriously believes that we should bring back the draft, not after the Vietnam experience. I don't think anyone really wants to.

That said, though, a part of me almost wouldn't mind some kind of compulsory civil service. Not necessarily military, because the military is definitely not for everyone, but I wouldn't mind too much forcing every youngster to give up a year of their life doing something to serve. Exactly what that would be, I don't know, I just think it might make everyone a little more patriotic and a little more thankful if they could see what it's like to serve. In some capacity...

Alternatively, some privledge could be made available only to those who volunteer to serve, voting, tax breaks, or something.

It already is. A free education. Every upper class or upper middle class person who is in the army right now is there purely because that's what they wanted to do. The special privilege of college tuition is employed to entice people who otherwise might not have made the choice to serve.

p.s. treeman: if you're deployed into a dangerous situation, good luck, godspeed, be safe and come home soon.
