    Yes, it's odd. @pgabriel asks for technology to help make us a leader again. Yet, when the idea of technology that we could absolutely take the lead on and become a world leader, he says it will happen when it happens and there is no need for investment to take the steps that would actually make us a world leader.

    The market will drive new technology. When there is an issue people looking to capitalize will find a solution. Trying to force something before its time gets you BS like Solyndra. The government ends up picking the winners and losers through crony capitalism when the government gets involved.

    Apparently, you don't know the story of the forest but only the Solyndra tree. The investment in solar companies turned a profit. It wasn't a loss. So investment in those types of programs has shown to be successful and profitable.
