yes the mud flies in both directions... but one really nasty bit of mud slinging that comes to mind whenever i think of Rove is in SC. when Bush and McCain were campaigning for the rep nomination. phones calls began to go out saying that McCain adopted a black child (i believe she was actually vietnamese). needless to say, bush won the nomination and became president. i concede that Rove is a brilliant tactician but his methods can be described as machiavellian... Come with me... my _, run quick see... what do we have here now, do you wanna ride or die, la da da la da da la da da da...
A few sympathizers? The Republican candidate for Lt Gov all but called the Dems queer from the stage of a campaign event... and to applause I might add. The Republican Party is paying Pat Boone to make anti-gay calls and you say a few sympathizers. Sort of like Abu-Ghraib was a few bad apples. Yes, Jim Neal is gay. He's also lived out of state for most of his life and was considered a dark horse candidate even before it was widely known he was gay. The filing deadline for the race isn't until Feb and there has been jockeying going on between other Dems about who else might possibly get in, and it looks like at least one other person will be in the primary. What horror! A contested primary! In fact, if you use a little Google, you'll see a fair number of Dem leaning orgs are speaking favorably of him. He is not the "senate candidate" of the party. Yet. So, Dems were looking for higher profile candidates before he announced his orientation and several potential candidates were considering a run, and one did get in. Again, the others have until Feb. to throw their hats in the ring. Still, if you know of any substantiated sources that claim Dems are pushing others because of the gayness thing, I'd be interested in hearing about them.
Now you've proven to have either your head completely in the sand, or being so totally aligned with Bush that it doesn't matter what you'll post to support him. That statement is just ludicrous, with all due respect. Even Rove would blush. D&D. Attempt Civility! Impeach Bush for Promoting Torture.
No. I'm blaming the administration. As much as you'd like to conflate the two, they are not the same.
Interesting that other calls were "faked" to this number... this one particular number. Once again, this is quite a coincidence.
I know! Don't you just wish for the old days when Democrats would just lay down and not fight back against the republican slim machines and just keep their mouths shut? I mean, things were so much simpler then.
I can't recall a time when politicians of any persuasion laid down against an opposing verbal barrage. I can, however, recall a time when they were civil about it. Of course, I am old.
The traditional comity between the two parties began to break down when the GOP unexpectedly gained control of Congress in Clinton's first term in '94. With the arrival of Bush and Rove, it was pretty much given lip service (no pun intended) by the GOP leadership. Predictably, they're screaming bloody murder now that they've lost their majority. What was good for the goose doesn't taste good to the gander. It'll just get worse after the Democratic Party increases their majority in '08, which they will be doing. On a smaller scale just because it involves Texas, which isn't that small considering we're larger and more populated than many countries, we saw this happen in the state legislature. Redistricting destroyed Texas legislative traditions going back several decades. Civility, and not just play acting, was not the exception, but the rule, at least in the state senate prior to its destruction by the state GOP leadership. I hope they are enjoying those extra seats while they can, and I hope they enjoy their dishes served cold. D&D. Attempt Civility! Impeach Bush for Promoting Torture.
I don't remember who said it but I always thought it was funny and very accurate of today's world. "If you're not liberal when you're 20, you have no heart. If you're not conservative when you're 40, you have no brain."
Without meaning to belabor your salient points, Bush rode into the presidency on the premise that he could work very well with Democrats -- as the new Great Compromiser. I only hope that the Democratic Party as a whole is ready to put an end to the rancor. If they do, they will build a new American consensus. If not, we will continue the acrimony -- and the tides of power will continue to shift aimlessly and destructively.
And if you're one of the last few Bush supporters in the country, of any age, you have neither. The cutesy cliche above (which gets posted here about once a month) doesn't make much sense anymore. The Republican party has moved far, far away from every conservative principle except tax cuts for the rich. And I take exception to the idea that opposing the stupid disaster of a war in Iraq or supporting equal rights for gays or health care for uninsured children means that I have no brain.
The quote is generally attributed to Winston C, though several variations exist. And as Batman noted, it doesn't make sense anymore. Churchill was operating from very different assumptions about what conservative and liberal mean. What's more than a little ironic is that the libs on this board are the most conservative when it comes to things like the balance of powers, privacy, and human rights while some of the people who call themselves conservatives are the most radical.
Of course you do, no one likes it pointed out that if they were a Wizard of Oz character they would be the scarecrow.
I don't take exception because I'm offended; I take exception because it's a stupid premise. People with brains oppose the Bush administration on virtually every front, but most especially on the Iraq war.
