To be fair, I see conservatives refusing to discuss topics and claim, inaccurately, that anyone that doesn't march to the left's beat gets labeled racist and trash worthy of scorn. I rarely see anyone labeled that way who hasn't said or done something worthy, but the right just try to brush off accurate descriptions of racism as another example of a constant accusation of such.

If you have been called racist, it is almost certainly because you have done or said something racist.

You mean, like you did with regard to The Young Turks just a few posts up in the very same thread?

    Hypocrisy, thy name is bobby.

    Can you define “racist”?

There isn’t even strong agreement on what it means to be racist, so I’m not sure how your statement can be accurate.

I see you are confused again, the narrative pushed by TYT isn't wrong because it was them saying it, it was wrong based on the lack of substance behind what was being said and i never meant to imply otherwise.

The reason the narrative is wrong is that it's an extended analogy fallacy and an example of Godwin's law. I inaccurately assumed people would realize that without me spelling it out....but I clearly didn't accountfor you.

You didn't address the substance, you just called out the statement because it was made by TYT.

    And, an attempt at insult.

Fallacies and insults, all that bobby has.

Like I said, I assumed it would be obvious to everyone, since it wasn't obvious to you, I went ahead and spelled it out for you.

“Showing discrimination” and “feeling prejudice”. As I said, people don’t agree on what this means.

"Shows" tends to be pretty evident. Like I said, the people who actually get called out for racism have, WAY more often than not, done or said something that demonstrates racism.

You seem to think you spelled everything out, but as usual all you did was make a baseless claim and back it up with nothing but your opinion.

So was that OKC broadcaster who used the phrase “cotton-pickin mind” about a black basketplayer being racist? Many people said his comment was racist.

Was that Portland shop manager who said a black women who entered the store after shop hours had to leave being racist? Many people said it was racism.

Or what about the case of Bret Weinstein and Evergreen State? Again, plenty of people said his stance was racist.

The “racist” label is used liberally against anyone who causes offense to a racial minority. And many people will argue that anytime someone does something that disproportionately affects racial minorities, that is “discrimination” — hence racism. This stuff is not at all cut and dried, in my view.

    How many is "many?"

Of course not, unless she allowed white women to stay and shop while black women were denied entrance.

    Again, how many is "many?"

    Never heard of this one.

Yes, the "racist" label is used against people who offend racial minorities. When people say and do racist and offensive things, they should be called out for the bigots they are showing themselves to be.

You use the phrase "many people" a lot. I think that you're listening to too many pundits claiming that "many people" think the above were instances of racism when in reality, few actually saw racism.

I agree. However, I would submit that for every one of the examples you posted above (assuming they are all inaccurately labeled "racist incidents"), I can find a dozen incidents where bigots said and did racist things in recent history. For f*** sake, white supremacists actually had a rally and marched in an American city barely over a year ago. Do you think there were racists in that crowd? Enough racists to counterbalance the minuscule number of times that racism was claimed in a "boy who cried wolf" scenario?

Perhaps to you, but I find a lot of times that there isn't general agreement on what is and isn't racism in the context of how and when it happened. What has happened over the last 20 years is that some people (usually on the left) believe any claim of racism is accurate and other people (usually on the right) believe that any claim of racism is invalid.

To me this is the biggest issue that causes the divide. Both sides point to incidents they have seen or experienced to justify their position.

    Interesting slight of hand there.

Yes, when people do racist things, they should be called out on it.

Causing offense to a racial minority does not imply committing a racist act. The fact that you don’t see the difference underscores my point.

As for all your other “how many?” questions, enough for the broadcaster to lose his job, for the shop owner be forced to make a public apology or risk being ostracized as racist, and enough for Weinstein (a liberal, Bernie Sanders supporter) to have to leave his job due to physical threats against him for his alleged racism.

Causing offense to a racial minority with racially charged words and/or actions doesn't merely imply that a racist act was committed, doing so is part and parcel the definition of racism. If you say something derogatory about a person who is a racial minority, that is racism, pure and simple.

And the fact that you are conflating a whole host of things underscores mine. I'm not saying that merely saying something that offends someone who happens to be a racial minority is what should be defined as "racist," there is a necessary racial component required. However, it appears that you're just trying to throw up a blanket statement that "too many" people are called "racist" when such accusations aren't justified. I just don't see that happen all that much. For the most part, people (like Roseanne) who are accused of saying racist things did indeed do or say something racist. I hear conservatives claim (repeatedly) that merely disagreeing with a Democrat or liberal will get you called a racist. I've never seen evidence of such a dynamic, but I also make a point of refraining from saying racist ****.

Not familiar with the situation, the broadcaster, or his history, but if the employer felt the statement was over the line, that's their prerogative.

Again, not familiar with the particular incident, but it certainly stands to reason that a businessperson might want to derail any bad press with a public apology or (as in the Starbucks case) even more action.

You do realize that he only left his job for one day, right?
