I'm gone for a week from the D & D and this is the sad state that political debate has been reduced to here. A debate regarding an issue that someone misheard, likely deliberately.

The question was "What their favorite Bible verse was" and not "Can you recite a Bible verse." Most of the candidates named some part of the Bible that they liked and since the Bible is in verse form they answered the question correctly. It would be like someone asking "what is your favorite Shakespear play?" and saying Hamlet. That's not the same as expecting them to recite Hamlet.

I know religion is a big issue but it surprises me that essentially a non-issue fluff question is the hottest topic on D & D. While this question deals with whether they are Christian it is more particularly what they find appealing about Christianity. Its not about whether they like or dislike Christianity.

To answer Deckard's question. Decker was the captian of the USS Enterprise at the start of Star Trek I who Kirk retakes command from to deal with the threat of V'ger. Decker at the end of the movie realizing that he doesn't stand a chance of commanding the Enterprise as long as Shatner is still around merges with V'ger and ascends to a higher plane of TV Shows like 7th Heaven.

eh..it's not that simple. there are separate discussions that flare up in these threads that take on a life of their own.

That's true but from skimming this thread it does seem primarily to be about the Dem candidates ability to recall Bible verses. As I stated that wasn't the question but if the issue is how Christian are they or how much they like Christianity that doesn't seem to be an issue at all. From the transcript they all seem to like Christianity.

You're missing the point of the thread entirely. The transcript wasn't posted until later. I missed it entirely. The discussion was around them not saying anything at all, which is the way TJ presented it. Now the discussion is about the discussion.

It's definitely happening. The left has an opportunity to reclaim moderate religious voters with the frustration with Bush. Unfortunately, ultimately, just like their counterparts on the right (who are better at this part), they are all power-hungry politicians who's primary goal is to convince people of their faith rather than actually live by it.

As an example of the Dems talking about faith more, Obama recently started a series of Bible studies in South Carolina.

The transcript was posted on page 2 but even missing it TJ was completely misleading in the way he presented this and I would hope that something as inflammatory as the thread title and the original post in this thread would be taken with a ton of salt.

Anyway you are right. The discussion is now about the discussion..

I think Dick Cheney said this in a debate once...

"He will give His angels charge of you,... On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone."

    That was Dick Cheney, right?

Oh nevermind... I know who it was.

    It was Satan.

"And the tempter came and said to Him, "If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread."

But He answered, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'"

Then the devil took Him to the holy city, and set Him on the pinnacle of the Temple, and said to Him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, 'He will give His angels charge of you,' and 'On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.'"

Jesus said to him, "Again it is written, 'You shall not tempt the Lord your God.'"

Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them; and he said to Him, "All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me."

Then Jesus said to him, "Begone, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve.'" (Matthew 4:3-10 RSV)

Which proves that IT DOESN'T MATTER who can quote a Bible verse.

    I realize you're probably right. I'm just hopeful you're wrong! :)

I do think Edwards is sincere. He was talking about his faith 4 years ago pretty openly...it sorta distinguished him from the crowd back then.

It's revealing that no one here is willing to focus on why the real bedrock of the democratic party -- MoveOn.org, dailykos, etc -- are trashing the candidates for pandering to Christians with their responses to Russert's question. Why would they want to distance theirselves from Christianity in such a way? Does the bedrock of the democratic party really feel that Christian values should not be present in a Presidential candidate? Revealing. Telling...

I don't think any Christian can vote for these candidates, particularly considering that they are going to be beholden to the interests that funded them -- Godless, heathens such as dailykos and MoveOn.org.

Based on what I've read and heard from him, I'm convinced that Barack Obama is a believer, and it's not just for show.

Pontius Pilate (Roman politician)- “Where are you from?”

Jesus (the Son of God)- silence. But Jesus gave no answer.

Pilate- “Why don’t you talk to me?” Pilate demanded. “Don’t you realize that I have the power to release you or crucify you?”

Jesus- “You would have no power over me at all unless it were given to you from above"

Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God. So anyone who rebels against authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and they will be punished.

For the authorities do not strike fear in people who are doing right, but in those who are doing wrong. Would you like to live without fear of the authorities? Do what is right, and they will honor you. The authorities are God’s servants, sent for your good. But if you are doing wrong, of course you should be afraid, for they have the power to punish you. They are God’s servants, sent for the very purpose of punishing those who do what is wrong. So you must submit to them, not only to avoid punishment, but also to keep a clear conscience.

Pay your taxes, too, for these same reasons. For government workers need to be paid. They are serving God in what they do. Give to everyone what you owe them: Pay your taxes and government fees to those who collect them, and give respect and honor to those who are in authority.

Love Fulfills God’s Requirements; Owe nothing to anyone—except for your obligation to love one another. If you love your neighbor, you will fulfill the requirements of God’s law. For the commandments say, “You must not commit adultery. You must not murder. You must not steal. You must not covet.” These—and other such commandments—are summed up in this one commandment: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no wrong to others, so love fulfills the requirements of God’s law.

It will be a long time before I'm able to wash the scene in my mind when you met your future wife with an owl on your shoulder. I'll let you decide who were the jackals...

You don't have to scrub the scene away, giddy... it was really a very cool moment the two of us have never forgotten, but if you do, be sure to use an organic soap, OK? ;)

If the jackals are Republicans, it's alright. I have several friends who call themselves Republicans, although some of them voted the other way in the last election, and intend to vote Democratic in 2008, thinking it's time for a change. Doesn't mean they're leaving their party. They're not. They just think that their party has left them, and needs a boot in the rear. :)
