Nike, What exactly is the type that would like Moiso? No, seriously I'm waffling back and forth on who they should take. I'd be happy with Miller, Johnson or Moiso. They all have weaknessess, but they all have potential. Right now I'm leaning toward Moiso. Sounds like there's a good chance that Miller might be there for us because Atl is leaning toward Johnson. I'd be ok with Johnson if we picked him. I don't really have a problem with Johnson, my problem is with people painting him as a can't miss star (I know you've been saying he has the potential to be a bust, but you're one of the few). So, I guess the best answer to your question is: 1a) Moiso 1b)Miller 3) Johnson ------------------ [This message has been edited by aelliott (edited June 27, 2000).]
Aelliot ------- Isn't Miller's defensive skills questionable? I know he can play trap defense but wasn't he kind of suspect when on defense, something about slow foot work. ------------------ Let Rudy & CD stun us in the 2rd round of the draft not the first. I don't think Miller is slow footed. I agree that he's not exceptionally quick, he's pretty much average quickness. Of course Moiso and Johnson didn't really excel on defense in college either. I know that they're both athletic, but that doesn't neccessarily make you a good defender (see Vince Carter,Larry Hughes,etc...). Miller brings alot of skills to the game and has a really high basketball IQ and that can overcome alot. Larry Bird played pretty good defense despite the fact he was slow and couldn't jump. He compensated by the fact that he had a great understanding of everything that was happening on the court. ------------------ [This message has been edited by aelliott (edited June 27, 2000).]
You are killing me. I have not laughed this hard in years. Bird played below average 1-1 D for a 3. Bird's team D was better but only average. All of this does take into account that the refs swallowed their whistles when it came to calling a foul on his Birdness. ------------------
aelliott, You are indeed wrong about this. McHale always got the job of defending the quicker, high scoring 3s like Wilkens. One of Bird's special plays on team D was to shove his forearm through the opponents back to get a defensive rebound. I can still hear echos of Tommy Heinsohn saying "What a great play by Bird!". ------------------
ae-I thought you'd be one of the people who thought Moiso was too soft, poor game, lacks focus, and is a Rogers clone, I was wrong . There is no such thing as a "can't miss prospect". I find guys like Etan Thomas to be really close to sure bets, because you know exactly what you're getting-a good sized great defensive PF, that doesn't have much hope of averaging more than 12 ppg in the pros, but guys like Dermarr, Miles, Moiso, even Swift could become 4 point, 2 rebound, out of the NBA in 4 years guys. Joe Smith had a load of potential.....BUST. I think Miller will be a solid pro, but nothing special. He has a well rounded game, and is a nice player, but he doesn't have that one big thing, that's really good in his game, or has a lot of potential. ------------------ The more lefties on your team, the better. Draft Moiso. Trade Moises. Trade or bench Kenny Thomas.
guys this topic is on dermarr not the celtics team D. AE i wasnt tryin to make dermarr sound like a cant miss star. all im saying is if dermarr works hard at his game and bulks up phsyically he could be a superb player and very well a star. thx for correctin me on the stats, but for a freshmen that is still pretty impressive IMO. he has a nice release and a very smooth shot and the ability to shoot over anyone. i agree id rather have miller though. he has better basketball IQ. he reminds me of a poor mans lamar odom fused together with dan marjele in his prime. moiso would be nice but im worried kenny T's confidence would be shattered if we drafted another PF. stevie himself said we dont need help at PF right now. i wanna see how kenny T does with a good summer workout programming, and better court sense of not tkaing so many 3s. ------------------ --TEX
McHale always got the job of defending the quicker, high scoring 3s like Wilkens Ok, so what PF's lit Bird up on a consistent basis? Sorry, I know it's off the topic of the thread and I promise that it'll be my last comment on Bird in this thread. ------------------
Moiso at 7' and 245 lbs has the potential down the road to slide over and play 5. Rudy then could use a three man rotation for the 4 and 5 spots, i.e. Rudy could use Moiso like he did Thorpe and Willis. AE, I can't think of any team that had a 3 and a 4 who were there two top options on offense for their team during the Bird Era. Atlanta would be the closest thing, but Willis split minutes at the 4 and 5. The Hawks other center was Konkak I think, which I am sure that even Bird's D could completely shut down. Back on topic ... ------------------
I gotta disagree there. Bird played very good team defense. The only small forwards that really went off on Boston was Wilkens and Bernard King, but they pretty much did that to everyone. ------------------ [This message has been edited by aelliott (edited June 27, 2000).]
