I don't get all these food snobs who claim that if something isn't "authentic" then it isn't good food. Who really cares if something isn't authentic? If it tastes good, then it tastes good. It doesn't have to be authentic. In fact, I would have to guess that places like Yao's that serve nice white meat chicken pieces in their general tso's chicken is better meat than what is in the "authentic" food, anyways.
Dead right. TexMex isn't "authentic" Mexican, but as we all know here in Houston, TexMex kicks the living crap out of actual Mexican food. In this case, the student surpasses the master. It shouldn't be about what's the most "old skool", but about what tastes best.
I need some info on Yao's restaurant. We're trying to decide where to go tonight to watch the games and grab dinner. Is there only one tv in the bar area, or are there multiples? Do you think they would have the Rockets and NCAA games on? Also, I'd like to get an idea of what their prices are like at dinner. Should a party of 4 expect to wait a while? Their website doesn't have any helpful info.
I have to disgree with you on this one. When Chinese say it is not authetic Chinese food, it means it does not taste good. The food is made to make Americans like it. That is why you think it tastes good. Taste good or not is really relative.
Not really. I work with some guys that are from China, and they love the food at PF Changs.....even though they also say it is not authentic Chinese food.
TexMex is its own kind of food. If you went to California to get "TexMex," I bet you'd be the first one complaining that its not authentic.
PF Changs is horrible. Pei Wei is horrible. This is also one of the reasons why some think that Yao would like it better in California. The chinese food there is better... and more authentic. The only thing they have in Houston is crap like Pei Wei and PF Changs. There isn't even a Pei Wei or PF Chang in San Francisco... you need to travel all the way to more white suburbs to get that crap.
Fortune Cookies are not authentic. Fortune cookies are American. They don't have them in China or Taiwan or Hong Kong or Singapore.
Cali can suck my left nut. Don't speak about Houston Chinese dining if you can only reference Pei Wei and P.F. Changs.
It's called an opinion. People have different ones....you'll get through life a lot better once you learn to accept that. And your last comment is your most ignorant. Either you're not from Houston, or you've never been to the Bellaire area.
I wouldn't go "to California to get 'TexMex'", cause I know where the good stuff is made, and Of course it wouldn't be authentic. It's called TEXMex, dude ... not 'CaliMex'. I'm not saying you couldn't get good TexMex outside of the Texas state lines, but as far away as California? They probably call Taco Hell TexMex. (I realize I've left myself open to an "American Chinese food" argument, but Chinese food and TexMex ... there's no comparison. I could eat TexMex every day of my life and die a happy -- albiet morbidly obese -- man.)[/list=A] Along the same lines, I bet the people in Paris b**** about 'French' fries (they call 'em pommes frites and eat 'em with mayonnaise [choke]) or 'French' dressing not being authentic, as do Germans over 'German' potato salad, the Swedish over those nasty meatballs, and folks on the Salisbury plain (home of Stonehenge) probably never heard of their namesake steak and would gag if told about it.
By the way, while in W. Germany with the Army in the 80s, I once ate at a combination Chinese-German restaurant. An hour later, I was hungry for power (bah-DUM-bump). Sorry, but the opportunity to use that one comes up so seldom. Besides, the thought of sweet and sour wienerschnitzel is freaking hilarious.
What are the prices like at Yao's restaurant? a) $ 1 - $ 6 b) $ 7 - $ 8 c) > $8 Is there a menu that can be viewed online somewhere?
I know exactly what you mean. One time I went to eat out with friends at a little Thai shop in Chinatown in Sydney and the waitresses serving us were hot. I was getting whiplash looking around.
Food sucks in general in Cali. Have you ever ordered a chicken fried steak there? I have and always got a piece of meat with corn meal or something on it. Horrid
First of all, have any of you guys ever been to China and eaten this so called "authentic chinese food"? I've been to China and have eaten this "authentic chinese food" and @ most places, it sucks. Bellaire has the same type of food, but much tastier. If you ever go to the smaller cities in China, the food is terrible. The best thing about the food in China is that most of the food is cooked fresh "chicken or cow was slaughtered the same day fresh". The larger resteraunts resort to the same methods as american resteraunts "factory produced meat". When it comes to China, I think it depends on where you go. The places that have decent/good food would be the top 4-5 cities. Some of the dishes I've ate there, is almost the same as some of the "americanized chinese food". After tasting the food in China, imo I like the food better here.
