Deke gets T for 'mocking' ref Crawford with a smile

The call that really bothered me was the Damon Jones 4 point play with 14.5 seconds to go. 80-78 in that situation is a lot better than 80-79 and replays clearly showed he was not touched. And what really annoyed me was all the TNT announcers could do was say how could James foul there when they had the benefit of replay. But again, if the Rockets don't go 1-8 from the FT line in the closing minutes, the game is never in that position.

That said, a technical for smiling? You see something strange everyday I guess.

That has to be one of the worst T's given out in all my 20+ years of watching B-ball, me and my wife were like, what the hell did he do?

Crawford is a joke.. maybe he's gone senile with old age.

Between the "smiling" tech, the 4 point-play in which Mike James made NO physical contact with Damon Jones, and Deke getting thrown basically to the 3-point line by Shaq on the most important rebound of the game.. that is some really sketchy officiating.

thats ridiculous. when a referee thinks hes more important than the game and the players on the court, he deserves to be fired.

but, unfortunately, david stern is way to smug to do anything about it.

I never complain about the refs as well... most of the time, Yao does actually foul the guy... and most of the time, all these bad calls against us even out (we just don't remember the the ones that went for us).

BUT... Joey Crawford trying to become the CENTER OF ATTENTION last night is absolutely where I have to draw the line. If this had happened in the playoffs, he'd be out of the league Jake O'Donnel-style.

One of the worst thing that can happen to a ref is after he's been around for a while, he feels like he's just as much a part of the game and the NBA as the players are... like they're all playing in his back-yard or something.

    WRONG

You are not being paid a six-figured salary (which I also think is ridiculous) to start getting all moody whenever entire arenas think you just blew a call (which he very well may have done)... GET OVER YOURSELF. If you blew a call, expect some more outrage than normal... don't compound the situation by calling techs and what not to show everybody that "you're still in charge."

Its times like these when I really start to HATE the NBA, simply because the refs are such a big part of the game... I honestly wouldn't mind doing away with all these long-time refs, and just calling the game like they do in college (strictly by the book... and you never hear the names of those refs at all).

em I think it was Eddy Jones who made the first 4-point play.

I agree with everything else you highlighted. That Crawford guy issues date way way back to even the days of Clyde here in Houston.

Glad I wasn't the only one who saw that, that foul was all caused because Jones acted like he got hit but he wasn't ever touched

Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking. I think Yao got his hand tangled in the NET and they called it goaltending. Wade hangs on the rim and suddenly they forget the rule?

Then down on the other end of the court, smiling the wrong way will earn you a T. WTF?!?

Please, let's not confuse this T with any call that involves seeing or not seeing something. That other stuff is just human error; any of us could screw it up while trying our best.

The T is a very straightforward abuse of the referee's power. He stated his exact reason for making the call. The stated reason is absolutely indefensible. That's why he should be suspended.

Exactly... I'm so glad that both ESPN and the Chronicle decided to include that quote in their articles.

The NBA has to take notice of this, and at the very least, avoid scheduling Crawford for any of our upcoming games... he may be the ULTIMATE superstar ref.

Did anyone else notice that they didn't call a T on Wade when he went up and grabbed the rim on Deke's shot in the 4th quarter? Either a T or Goal tending, they had to call something and didn't. They tried their best to give Miami the game, but in the end, cheater's proof didn't let it happen.

The lane violation on Deke giving Shaq an extra free throw was crap too. Good thing he sucks at shooting free throws.

They said that because someone was under Wade, he could hang on the rim to avoid landing on someone.. Safety first i guess.. rules 2nd.

every week on NBAtv, Ronnie Nunn(head of officials) comes on and discusses controversial calls from the previous week. I'm curious to see if they talk about the Heat@ Rockets games, with a few questionable calls.

I'd like to see him defend Crawford on that technical...

basically, Mutombo was called for a sarcastic smile, in Crawfords eyes.

since when did controlling your emotions by taking the higher road warrant a T??

How could that Barry saved ball could have been a possession? He couldn't have called time out on that play because he grabbed the ball past the outbound lines & after his feet had left the floor. If that isn't considered possession for a timeout, it can't be considered a possession for any other reason.

Another thing is that in the replay, Barry's right foot was clearly out of bounds while the ball was still in his hands. Granted it was a bang bang play, but still, it was another missed call on that play.
