Yes, and I should have mentioned that. It's going to take a serious commitment to culture and pay to fix this. Here's a couple of articles from the past couple of years: (transcript at the link, the bbs will only let me post the audio) https://reason.com/2019/06/25/u-s-c...isis-will-it-force-them-to-change-their-ways/
If we're being honest, being a policeman is a health hazard....physical, mental, chronic you name it. They are first responders (9/11), essential workers(covid), community ambassadors(24/7). You know how people complain teachers are proxies for parenting? Police are proxies for adulting society...when society can't handle itself. Same thing. They're not the disease, but the symptom. Solving unions for both can enact change (or set things back for decades). When successful, people forget why that change was needed. Lather, rinse, repeat
Unions can be a wonderful force for good. They can also be a total impediment to change. We're in the impediment stage wrt the police.
Actually not true. When used properly, they're one of the best methods of crowd control. Nobody ****s with horse cops, much better that dudes in riot gear with shields and helmets. See: Mardis Gras.
Yea, nice way to lump things in. 18% is nuts Thinking about what you have heard or seen about the demonstrations around the country after George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis at the hands of police, please respond to each of the following questions: Do you think the police are being: Too aggressive - 34% Not aggressive enough - 18% Appropriately to the demonstrations - 38% Unsure - 10%
I have the benefit of both inner loop and waaaaay outer loop mystical knowledge, like a Renaissance Man and ****.
Haven't been to either in years. I can tell you the good highway general stores and kolache shops and wineries to stop at though.
Defunding and taking away their military weapons is the way to go, and turning off body cameras should be an automatic suspension. DD
This hasn't been mentioned enough, and you're right. Dashboard cams and/or body cams should be on at all times to document every interaction they have with the public.
Not necessarily true and that's because the person being tested is quite often dishonest. People do their best to hide their character flaws ....
I told my friend who is a HPD we demand body cams on at ALL times. If he's ****ing his wife, the public needs to see it. Along with a lot of other extreme commentary. He's a good sport about it.
I question the sanity of anyone applying to be an officer in a major urban center. I expect the pool of candidates to worsen dramatically.
From what I know, only a total psychopath (of which there are thankfully very few) can sometimes be undetectable. Read up on it, it's pretty fascinating stuff. It just depends on the level of testing and the tolerance for "failure".
That to me seems like plain ole common sense. Shouldn't have to be said - but does have to be said. Common sense is a super power - It aint so common.
Not realistic to expect a bodycam to catch every interaction. They fail all the time. Whether it is the batteries, heat, or cold, etc. I know some dash cams are setup to have a delay so when they are turned off they don't just shut off right away. That way an officer can't shut it off and go kick someones ass and claim he was attacked.
