Or maybe just wishful thinking by a New York based definition writer.

    Hilarious find!

I think it's cool that the Rockets are mentioned as a sportsball team the public would identify with.

    Maybe all of the above.

The "trounce" entry in Oxford University Dictionary probably written by a Brit who happened to live in the U.S. in 1994.

No U.S. native would use these two teams, otherwise. It would be "Yankees and Dodgers", or "Knicks and Lakers". LOL @ "Rockets" (no offense).

Seinfeld episode "The Susie" aired Feb 97

KRAMER: Allison. Hi. Uh--listen. I'm really sorry about what happened at the game last night. Listen--could I have a ticket tonight--'cause the Rockets are in town an' that, Hakeem Olajuwon? Ohhh--he's got a real attitude.

True. Surprised me at first, but it's a credit to Houston.

Did you really submit a comment like this? I love it!

I might have only added, "As a fan of the Houston Rockets, I feel the team has been unfairly diminished in your dictionary and would greatly appreciate your changing the example sentence to something less inflammatory, given that the unlikelihood that the New York Knicks with defeat much less trounce the Rockets in any context in the foreseeable future.

It is a joke someone played with this 1998 NY Times article title: "Rockets Trounce Knicks"

    http://www.nytimes.com/1988/03/25/sports/rockets-trounce-knicks.html

"Purvis Short matched his season high by scoring 33 points tonight as the Houston Rockets led from the opening tip in a 134-117 victory over the Knicks.

Akeem Olajuwon added 26 points and 15 rebounds for the Rockets, who broke a two-game losing streak.

The loss left the Knicks in a three-way tie with Philadelphia and Washington for the final Eastern Conference playoff berth. All three teams have a record of 29-38.

Gerald Wilkins led the Knicks with 20 points.
The Rockets took a 70-55 halftime lead after overcoming the Knicks' pressing tactics in the second quarter.

Short left the bench to score 14 points in the fast-paced first half. He went back to the bench late in the game after hitting four straight baskets.

Houston scored the first 6 points of the game. Its biggest first-half lead was 68-48 with 1 minute 45 seconds to go."

their logo is the Beats by Dre logo but backwards and in a different color. Or maybe Dr. Dre took the logo from Oxford.
