If you put that team on the floor, they wouldn't need to.... Battier, Hayes, and Mutombo would combine for 2 points and a truckload of intangibles. Rockets lose 80-2.

I hear you. I didn't mean we should necessarily start that group or even use them together at all. Hypothetically, though, if we needed one stop, it wouldn't be a bad option.

The Bulls in the late 90s put Rodman and Jordan on the floor at once, both players who have Defensive Player of the Year on their resume

You must be a Nugget or a Pacer fan if you care what those guys did when they were on another team. ;)

Tinman makes some really good threads and some really bad threads trying to prove some point.

This is a good thread!!! =)

Offense win ball games, but Defense win champions!!

I love our team right now. I love the fact that we have amazing defenders at every single position. Yes, it was amazing what tmac did against SA, against Dallas in game 1 and 2 of the 04 05 play off, but what did that get us??

I love tmac's offense, but would never comprise the Ron Ron and Batman tandem to keep tmac.

Unlike tinman, I still think tmac has some value. If he was 100% he could have really helped this team. We could really use another play maker, another creator, someone to spark the offense when Yao is in a funk.

He is no clyde. And yes, you never knew what D or effort you were getting out of him on a given night. But up until this year, assuming it was b/c of injury, what you did know is that he is a reliable playmaker and passer, something I seriously think we are lacking at this point.

Yes. I hear Jordan had some offense, too, but I could be mistaken (not to mention they were both in their primes winning - are Deke and Hakeem doing it for us now?). If I am, then I'm all for starting Chuck Hayes - he's the next MJ.

Its funny how your showing a clip from 94' the game has evolved tremendously. LOL and you say I need to learn about basketball. You should look at Brooks Ball post. I believe thats an excellent example.
    Lowry
    Artest
    Battier
    Hayes
    Mutombo

No one is scoring besides Artest. Lowry can give you 12 points. Battier is iffy. Hayes and Mutombo. Hahaha don't hold your breath. I would like to see this happen though just to prove my point.

what's wrong with this thread? not all fans know about the defensive resumes of our players. this is a purely educational thread! Some fans saw old Deke play and wondered, wow did he ever win anything for his defense when he was younger? Or Ron Artest. The casual fan just knows he has a brawl on his resume.

this spans the past and the present of the nba at the same time, its like that blue dude on watchmen.

Tmac not playing and our team defensive improving is already proving my point.

Its because of TRU leadership and TRU defense.

When you win Defensive Player of the Year, it shows you care more about the team than yourself.

That's why Ron Artest refers to himself as "Ron Artest"

There's no "Its on me". Me is selfish.

    tinny,

defensive stats can absolutely be padded as easily as offensive stats. if camby played straight up d on his man, he wouldn't have a third of the blocks he gets. but he doesn't. he probably triples his stats by leaving his man open in the paint 2 go for the spectaculr stat-padding block. same goes for him on rebounds. he doesn't block his man out. he just goes for the ball. that, tinny, is stat-padding to the same degree as a volume shooter.

also, the "defense wins championships" mantra is a myth now. teams that win now have balance. boston could shut u down and score. same for the spurs. same for detroit. they all were/are able to play great defense along with multiple tempos on offense.

Lets wait till the playoffs to settle this debate. If we get out of the first round this year then it's clear whether all this Tmac bashing is justified.

    camby
    stockton
    j smith
    iverson
    dwight howard

I could go on, but u should get the point by now. stats no more make a defensive player than ppg does an offensive player. simple concept, really.

what's ironic is u have blasted tmac fans in the past for (among other things) harping on his scoring stats. but u seem to be doing the same thing.

Defense wins championships. It is true for all the professional team sports, NHL, NFL, NBA, MLB etc.

That is why having Artest will help immensly in the post season.

let me put it this way...

efficient offense has been tru lately, too. without that, the tru defense isn't enough. we may not "need no stinkin scoring champ", but we do need efficiency offensively to go with tru defense. where we get it from is inconsequential (tru v mac v ab v scola). i just know we NEED it. without it, we'll be the 94 knicks in a better 2009 western conference.
