Sabbath and Priest DON'T to think it's either or. Halford sang for Sabbath on a few dates. http://youtu.be/R-4BthN-TjA <iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/R-4BthN-TjA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
I would say Sabbath because they invented heavy metal, but I have a soft spot in my heart for Priest since they were the first concert I ever attended.
This was 1979- there was still a backlash against Kiss at that time- remember, they came out with the disco-sounding "I Was Made for Loving You"? We were all burned out on Kiss by the end of the 70s.
Zeppelin came out with Dazed and Confused, You Shook Me, etc. before Sabbath. Zep definitely deserves to be recognized as the pioneer of metal music. The Kinks, The Who, and the Yardbirds only hinted at the type of stuff Zeppelin did on their first album.
This is the story I've been told since I'm not that old Here in Macedonia (and ex-Yugoslavia) the biggest rivalry was between Metallica and Iron Maiden. Since those 2 were the biggest bands known here, you simply cannot be a fan of them both. It was always one. The guitar players from my band who are 10 years older than me, loves Metallica but hates Iron Maiden, to them it's just E C D G when they speak of Iron Maiden... Me? Since I never grew up in that time I love both bands equally, Somewhere in Time and ...And Justice for All are one of my favorite albums. About Judas and Sabbath i never loved these 2 bands, but I have great respect for Painkiller/British Steel and Heaven And Hell. I can't stand Ozzy, no idea why... It's just me I guess....
I don't think he was disputing that, though the "invented metal" label has never sat too well with me. There were several bands that contributed heavily to the sound and style; that is undisputed. All the heavy musical stuff going on in the late 60's and early 70's culminated in Black Sabbath, and boom: heavy metal was born. And it's not taking anything away from the likes of Led Zeppelin to say that.
Hand of Doom 1970 for the win. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsK630FuTxk&feature=youtube_gdata_player
I don't think I should start a new thread for this, but since we are talking Maiden, what's your favorite album by them? I know it's cliche but I still love Number of The Beast. Every damn track. Piece of Mind is great, too.
Why don't you jsut go ahead and ask me which one of my kids I love more? Seriously.....ANY Maiden album up to the Blaze ones easily could be listed as my favorite, it just depends on how I feel that day. Some days I lean to grimy and gritty early albums (Iron Maiden, Killers, Number of the Beast) and some days I love the extended epics(Rime of Mariner, 7th Son, Alexander the Great, To Tame a Land) and slickly produced later albums (Piece of Mind, Powerslave, 7th Son, Somewhere in Time) They are still producing some very quality music(Brave New World, Dance of Death, Matter of Life and Death and The Final Frontier) today, but none of it quite grabs me like the initial run from 80-90. Ive seen them live the last 5 times they have been thru since 2000 and they STILL put on a killer show.
Yeah....their last show at the Woodlands was my first. Bruce had more energy that 15yo ADD meth addicts. I was blown away. \m/ >_< \m/
I just listened to Final Frontier for the first time about two months ago and I was pleasantly surprised. Might be my favorite of Bruce's 2nd run with the band. And I really liked Brave New World.
One of my favorite "gems" by Maiden: <iframe width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/71Ze6jsUd7A" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Powerslave kinda reminds me of Heaven and Hell in that EVERY song is just flat-out kickass. Here is one I totally neglected to mention earlier, altho it is one of my favorite live songs they do. (its 9 minutes, so be prepared.) FREEDOM! <iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/TaJKDYZ-n38" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> and this is a good example of new era Maiden. (from Brave New World) Caution: whoever ripped this next one was an idiot, the levels are much too high, turn your speakers down before clicking play. <iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/JyYo4N2tGCE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> and I just found this(thanks youtube suggestions!) and jsut had to share it. Maiden in 1980 doing Phantom with Paul Dianno. <iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/t5jaRipA5_M" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
<iframe width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/akt3awj_Ah8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> This song marks the birth of heavy metal. The moment the bells tolls, metal shot out of the womb of rock & roll.
I love this thread!!! Thanks for the awesome videos. Here's an obscure live Priest performance of Dreamer Deceiver from 1975. This is before the release of Sad Wings of Destiny, which many consider to be their first true metal album. Rocka-Rolla is more of the classic rock persuasion. Halford with long hair! <iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/6HSeYyd5wVA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
so have i but they need to put some variety in their act. the iron maiden, number of the beast, hallowed be thy name, running free/sactuary encore is so predictable and boring. i would love an entire show of piece of mind or 7th son. at the least add some "new" old material in the set list. also, Paschendale should be a staple.
The better question is Maiden or Priest. That's one that takes some serious thought. Axl Rose says Priest, but "Killers" is the best album from the 2 bands.
