Hey, Bima. (Or anyone) I'm weird, and I'm mostly concerned with keeping Troy Daniels. Can you, or anyone, give me a couple of the most realistic, plausible scenarios wherein Daniels stays a Rocket? Thanks in advance.
Scenario 1: We miss out on a major free agent We will just keep him in this scenario by matching any offer he gets, but probably by giving him a cheap deal. Scenario 2: We get a major free agent on a max deal We will have to renounce Troy Daniels at this point. The only way he would be able to return is for the minimum OR for part/all of the BAE of approx $2 million.
He stays a Rockets as long as he flies under the radar in free agency. I'm actually shocked that someone else hasn't caught onto what Cuban is doing to Morey and went hard after him on day 1 of free agency with a crazy offer (maybe full MLE) in the hopes of making Morey's day that much worse, and making it that much more difficult to get Bosh or whomever. (OKC is a team I'm shocked hasn't inquired about him with one of their exceptions. Smart enough GM to see what is happening in Hou and try and make life hell for Morey to upgrade the team)
No. No matter what scenario happens we could always sign him to the veteran's minimum will likely have at least around $2 million to sign a player.
After missing out on Gordon Hayward, Charlotte offers a max deal with a player option year and a trade kicker to Troy Daniels, and Morey -- after losing out on Parsons and spurned by Chris Bosh -- has no choice but to match so he can claim some kind of victory this summer. Daniels then goes on to his best NBA season yet, averaging 8.8 points and 2 assists on 18 minutes per game for 40 games as the sometimes-backup for Patrick Beverley.
That would backfire hard on Cuban. Morey wouldn't match that. He would just find another guy from the D-league.
Assuming Rockets go cap space route, Daniels can either sign a minimum deal ($816,482) or sign a deal in which the Rockets use a portion or all of the Room MLE ($2.732 million). Assuming Rockets go trade route, Rockets can use a portion of the taxpayer MLE. If Rockets us a S&T, they won't be able to have a total team salary over the apron of $81M.
1. He can't defend 2. He does nothing except 3pt shooting 3. We probably will sign him for a min cause no other team will not be interested....at all
Another important part of this....if the Rockets can get him for another 2 years, we will have his bird rights. Not important now....i know, but still a good option for us.
