He's expected to lose another $445k on Tuesday if he has not reported yet.

That, coupled with the $40k a day adds up quick.

It's a lot considering his current salary, but once Hopkins gets his new deal, I doubt he'd mind the hit. Still, Texans hold the cards and Hopkins doesn't have much leverage.

Ya but Rick Smith has opened that can of worms has been opened multiple times already. Watt and Mercilus got new deals with 2 years left and AJ got one with 5 years left. Difference in that neither of those guys held out but Smith has paid a lot of guys earlier than seemingly needed (Cushing being a prime example). Can't fault DeAndre looking at Smiths history and saying pay me now.

445k is a lot of money for anyone.

The Texans have him locked up for one more year after this right? The way that's structured seems hella team friendly.

If Rick Smith is smart, he wouldn't even return Hopkins' phone calls. Make him sweat, then offer him a small bump in 2016 as a face-saving concession for Hopkins, before doing a new deal with Hopkins next year. The Texans are not as reliant on Hopkins as they were before drafting 2 WRs and adding an RB with pass catching ability in Lamar Miller. Hopkins is a great player, but you can't run a business by caving in to labor's demands at every turn. Hopkins could risk huge dollars by holding out for the whole year -- his market value would plummet. Texans hold the cards provided Rick Smith doesn't cave to the fans' uninformed, inexperienced input.

Deandre, you signed the contract, now honor it like a man.

Right. Will he forfeit half his salary to sit out and try and force a new deal that the Texans say they won't give?

    It'd be dumb.

Most of the WRs we have drafted (7 picks) or acquired under b'ob have been busts.

    Hopkins was drafted by Kubiak.

Texans are in a bad spot with so many injuries and new players. They need Hopkins in camp badly

Players do it all the time. The agents are the one that's paying the fines.

Where are you getting 7 from? Only WRs BoB drafted are Strong and Mumphrey. The other 2 are rookies.

It's still risky because if the Texans don't cave, then he just cost himself like 500K for nothing and he still doesn't have a guaranteed contract past this season. He'd still end up playing this season for relative peanuts and if he got hurt or had a down season then he'd eventually have to pay back that agency if they fronted him the cash. He'd be much better off just showing up and getting that money.

Name the busts, please. O'Brien is going into his third season. Most of the time two seasons isn't enough time to consider someone a bust.

You know it's almost football season when Mr. Clutch starts his illogical bashing of O'Brien. All we need now is for Bobby to declare one subject and one player to crusade against.

if it goes in that direction for the Texans benefit, I guarantee he comes back with hands of stone.

Still don't think that number is right unless you are including the rookies. But calling a player a bust after one season is pretty nonsensical in itself.

Fair enough, but we've used a lot of picks and signed two free agents. That's a lot of investment, needs to work out.

    Having Hopkins out doesn't help

I'd hold out too. What if he gets hurt this year? So what he signed a contract. They have more than gotten their money's worth out of him and then some. They owe him.

What if he has a breakout season and puts up even better numbers? What if he won't sign an extension after that and enters free agency. What if he walks just to spite us and we get nothing in return? Both sides have risks.

Would an extension include more money for 2017?

I just said it was risky, not that it's guaranteed doom or anything like that.

If he won't sign an extension after that then the Texans "only" have him for 4 more years and they spend that time finding a replacement. I can live with that.
