That's a great deal...I've been thinking of getting one for my bedroom...But that would mean I upgrade my TV as well, so maybe maybe no...

I pulled the trigger on this deal about 45 minutes ago. It went smooth as butter- I walked into the Walmart electronics section, they got out a 40gb PS3, rung me up for $400+tax and gave me an IN-STORE gift card. I'm going to wait a week before I play the CSR game with my Chase Sony card (since they told me the $100 off is only for sonystyle stores/online).

The original post is a little misleading- you're going to pay, out of pocket, $399+tax. So even when you get the $100 GC, you still pay tax on an extra hundred. Not a huge deal, but it's more like you're saving $92ish depending on your sales tax rate.

I would say it is mandatory for any PS3 buyer to get the MGS4 bundle or if you already have one get MGS4, it's the masterpiece of the PS3!

Both my birthday and Father's day are coming up over the next couple of weeks, so I didn't buy any games due to that. I'll pass on your suggestions to the boss.

I just bought mine at wal-mart last night $388 with $100 gift card

Wal-mart off of Fry and I-10

I went at midnight debating if I should get the Metal Gear bundle but they were already sold out with people waiting in line for them.

So I ended up getting the 40GB. Which is fine with me because I already have a PS2 with a ton of burned games (probably shouldnt admit that) so I'll never need backwards compatability. Not sure what I would do with 80GB of space.

Also Metal Gear Solid 4 is $45 right now on Buy.com with google checkout.

I figured if I don't buy it now I'll regret it because the $100 gift card is a steal. (Gas or Groceries)

I've never been a huge fan of MSG so I couldn't justify $100 more even if I got twice the HD space. There was at least one MSG bundle at the Walmart in Galveston. Stuff 'in short supply' never sells out here- I got my Wii within a week of launch here fairly easy, and I'm counting on walking into the AT&T store on the Seawall on July 11 and seeing a stack of new iPhones.

lol i debated it for soooo long. but the choice was easy after i sold my xbox for around the same price because i figured having both systems would be redundant

so equal trade for me. im excited about the blu-ray and better exclusive games to come.

    The 80GB PS3 has part of the PS2 inside, while the 40GB PS3 doesn't. That's why it can play PS2 games, but the 40GB PS3 can't.

It should hopefully be capable of emulating the PS2 at some point though. That was the original plan before Sony even launched the PS3 (launch the PS3 w/o any PS2 parts inside), so I'm assuming they had some plan in mind that would make this more than possible.

Are you sure? I thought the 80GB was software emulation while the 60GB had the PS2 chip in there that allowed it to emulate any PS2 game while the 80GB can only do a percentage.

I'm sure. It is a common misconception that the 80GB PS3 uses 100% software emulation, but that's not quite the case.

The 60GB PS3 has both the PS2's CPU and GPU (as well as some of its RAM, although I'm not sure). The 80GB PS3 ditched the CPU (having the PS3 emulate it through software), but kept the PS2's GPU. It isn't technically wrong to say it uses software emulation, but I like to think of it more as a hybrid (hardware and software emulation).

The 40GB PS3 doesn't have anything from the PS2, so it would have to emulate both the CPU and GPU. The PS2's GPU is a bit weird, so it is probably difficult for Sony to get the PS3 to emulate it at an acceptable rate.

Biggie is correct for the most part. The 60gb has the actual PS2 chip while the 80gb runs on an emulator. The backwards compatibility of the 80gb is around 85% for the PS2 library.

However, the 60gb has been discontinued and so the prices are being inflated on eBay. Sucks.

Then I guess it won't be so easy to make the 40GB model BC :(. *sniff* I don't know why i hang onto my PS2 games for. They were kind of crappy hahaha.

BTW, in case someone doesn't believe me:
    http://threespeech.com/blog/2007/02/scee-respond-to-backward-compatibility-questions/
This is for the European launch of the 60GB PS3 (which was easier to find), but it is pretty much the same for the 80GB PS3 (HDD size is the only difference IIRC). I could always posts pics of the different motherboards for the PS3 too. :)
