Interestingly no one has complained about the obvious Mexican stereotypes in this pic. Is one okay but the other not okay? Or are there no people of Mexican descent on this board? My personal opinion is that any costume or caricature of a racial stereotype is just bad taste. I suppose if it were really clever or funny someone could pull it off, however, the ones in this picture aren't really very good so I'm not sure what the point is.... Having said that, you don't have a right to NOT be offended either...
i'm not going to say what should or should not be offensive for some people. i think it's mighty arrogant that people think they can decide what others should be offended by (and that works for both sides). that said, one has to know that this kind of thing could offend someone whether they think it should or not. that is why i would never do something like that.
If you gonna be racist at least have the decency to be racist behind closed doors That is what private clubs like AUGUSTA is for! Rocket River
I stand corrected, it's in the Dallas news now: http://cbs11tv.com/local/dallas.cowboys.cheerleader.2.1285094.html Cowboys Cheerleader Facing Costume Controversy Nov 1, 2009 7:41 pm US/Central Cowboys Cheerleader Facing Costume Controversy ARLINGTON (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― A Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader has brought some controversy to herself following the discovery of some Halloween photos on her facebook page that some say are inappropriate. The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders are the sweethearts of America's Team, yet the actions of one of the cheerleaders off the field have drawn scrutiny and criticism. Second-year cheerleader Whitney Isleib reportedly attended a friend's Halloween party dressed as rapper Lil' Wayne, who is black. Pictures of Isleib, who is white, were posted on her Facebook page. The photos were leaked to a sports blog, and that's where the controversy started. Fans we spoke with at today's Cowboys game against the Seahawks were mixed in their reactions. "If she wasn't a Dallas cheerleader would it really matter? It's Halloween, you know. you get to go how you want to go" says fan Laura Pyhrr. "I don't agree with it, but she wore Lil' Wayne and there she is. but I don't think it's the best costume" says Martisha Francis. One thing most everyone agreed on was anyone representing 'America's Team' should exercise better judgment. "I'm assuming you would hold yourself up to a higher standard - especially if you're playing for the Cowboys. But wow, not much I can say about that - it speaks for itself" says fan Richard Vasquez. No one from the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders or the team would officially comment, but a team spokesman told us the team is aware of the situation and addressing it internally. Isleib was also not available for comment following Sunday's game. http://www.nbcdfw.com/blogs/blue-st...er-Dons-Blackface-for-Halloween-68540047.html Bad Idea Jeans: Cowboys Cheerleader Dons Blackface for Halloween Meet Whitney Isleib of your Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders. Whitney is a 21-year-old Texas native whose self-confessed hobbies include sleeping and eating. SLEEPING AND EATING? Those are my favorite hobbies too! WE WERE BORN FOR ONE ANOTHER! Anyway, as you may have guessed, Whitney is just a fun-lovin’ gal who loves chillin’ out with friends and dressing up in blackface for Halloween. Wait, what? Oh, yes. Over the weekend, it appears Whitney decided to dress up as hip hop megastar Lil’ Wayne, complete with blackface makeup, gold chains, and fake gold teeth. She then posed for pictures in this outfit (bad idea), and then uploaded the photos to her Facebook page (reeeeeeally bad idea). And that’s how one enterprising Deadspin reader was able to get his hands on the pictures, along with screengrabs of Whitney’s Facebook page for verification, and send them to the sports gossip site, which quickly posted them. You can view all of the pictures at the above link. Not only does Whitney dress in blackface, but some of her friends decided to go as a mariachi band. And, you guessed it, they accomplished this feat by putting on BROWNFACE makeup. And so you have a Halloween party with people dressing up in both blackface and brownface. All they needed was Mickey Rooney playing a squinty Chinese person to complete the racial faux pas trifecta. Now, in Whitney’s defense, there are actual, real-life black people also in these photos. Many racist people always defend themselves by lying and saying they have black friends. Whitney has the advantage of being able to produce said real black friends to bolster her case. Also, Whitney is 21 and stupid. Her favorite movie is The Sweetest Thing. If that’s your favorite movie, it’s a miracle you know how to take alternate steps. So kudos to Whitney for being able to overcome her intellectual shortcomings in that regard. We sent an email to Kelli Finglass, director of the Cowboys cheerleaders, for comment about Whitney’s little social gaffe. She has not yet replied. We’ll keep you posted if Whitney gets demoted to cage dancing duties.
You're always going to offend someone, and there is always going to be something that's going to offend you. If you going around spending all your time worrying about crap like this, then you will never be able to accomplish anything. Do I find the term oriental or chinaman offensive. Sure I do. Do I get bent out of shape when someone uses the term. Most of the time, I would say know no because I know people aren't trying to be malicious when doing it. Sometimes you have to look at the intent.
Well, IMHO its not racist, just poor taste...the dude she was with did it too, but he's not a DCC right? that blond is hot...that's what we need to focus on... I went to a party and some dude did that...Poor taste...a black girl my friend is dating said it didn't bother her, but her did would be PO'd...
i agree Darryl: Come on Michael let me borrow the hat for just a couple of hours. Michael Scott: You wanna be Santa? Have you ever seen Santa? Darryl: Yeah, I've seen Santa. Who cares? Michael Scott: Well I'm sorry it just doesn't work. Dwight Schrute: Michael, I would like to be the elf. Michael Scott: That makes sense, because he has elfish features.
Bottom line? There is no law against offending someone. There is no Constitutional or legal guarantee not to be offended. There is no 'right' not to be offended. There is no legal recourse specifically because you may be offended by something. No one should have to fear causing offense, when offense is not the intent, as you cannot control what other people think, and the climate of hyper-sensitivity towards 'the offended' seeks to make one person responsible and liable for what someone else 'feels'. Impossible, illogical, and inherently inequitable. A person's only moral obligation, regarding 'causing offense', is the slight moral imperative to be concerned about what other people think. Some people care about such things, and some people don't. You do have the right to BE offended, however. I personally am offended by other people yelling about how offended they are. But I found a very effective way to break this vicious cycle: I literally DO.NOT.CARE. if someone is offended, or if someone thinks someone else is a racist. The fact that some random person may feel offended by some other random person's actions are utterly unimportant in any way. Sad thing? This girl is probably going to lose her dream job. Not because she did anything illegal, immoral, or wrong, but instead because A) someone is going to beat this non-news story with cries of 'Racist!' and 'We are offended!' until the organization fires her and (most importantly) B) because she is WHITE and chose to dress up like a black rapper for Halloween. Had a black cheerleader done it, no one would ever know or care. Yeah, there is racism there all right. Hallelujah.

"oriental" is offensive??? I'm Chinese and never knew that... why is that offensive? Not being sarcastic... quick background info, I'm fully Chinese but grew up in a school district in Dallas that is literally 98+% white. I was one of two minorities out of a graduating class of ~240, so I have no idea why "oriental" would be offensive? "chinaman" I can kinda see.
Something to do with oriental supposedly being food and for rugs and not people. I'm not offended by it. As for chinaman, here is an interesting essay I read a while back. http://www.racingmix.com/word/chink.htm
