The players know better than anyone just how full of **** the media is. And they know that baseball is a business. Don't read too much into it.
nvm he just hung up on them hahaha but he did say clemens went to drayton and asked to get help on the team
In RJ's defense you hear about 1000 rumors from credible sources every day when you are in that position. But RJ is not selective enough on what he actually reports. The fact is most sources can just tell RJ some things they want to happen, then he reports it as truth, ending up looking like an idiot. I am sure the Astros have gotten atleast 10 trade proposals. The thing to report is not specific rumors, just that player x and player y have been mentioned in trade rumors. That is it. not get all specific and definitely not say the crap he wrote about Drayton telling the GM to trade Lidge. Because when it doesn't happen, you look like even more of a fool. As far as Oswalt, I wouldn't be surprised if he leaves. If the Astros don't do crap this off-season to make real improvements to the team, then why should he stay?
It's all in how you report it. By saying Drayton demanded TP trade Lidge, that could cause serious problems with the player if he's not moved. Even though Lidge is a class act and understands the business, that doesn't make it any better. Not to mention the whole air of superiority he projects. "This is how it is, no matter what anyone else says." There's no reason to believe they won't.
really? i say there's no reason to believe they will. here's to brad ausmus and craig biggio! have fun starting for us as long as you want, scrubs!
I would bet dollars to doughnuts that if the Astros don't make the playoffs this year (obviously likely), they make a huge acquisition or two in the offseason. With Clemens's, Bagwell's, and Pettitte's salaries all coming off, Purpura will virtually have a blank checkbook. (McLane won't let him overpay for anyone, but will let him give full value for whomever.) I would expect a run at one front-line starter (Willis, Zito) and probably a run at one big bat (Carlos Lee?).
Bagwell and Andy P contracts save us about 35 million...throw in Clemens and Huff...and youve got about 50 million dollars free.
Yep, I think this is the case - but atleast we pissed off half the team with these rumors. They better get to that Oswalt extension STAT.
What makes anyone think they are willing to reload again this offseason to contend? That $50million is just off of a franchise record $106million which Drayton makes it a point to remind us about every chance he gets. We retooled in the past because we had a veteran ballclub. With those guys gone, what makes you so sure they don't just bring up Hirsh and Pence and try to build from within?
