i certainly understand that feeling. i just have a hard time throwing in the towel like that. if it were me, i probably would have tried to be a buyer...but i'm a ridiculous optimist.
I'm guessing they tried a little bit of both. With some of the people we were rumored to be after, other moves were going to have to be made to make room for them. I'm guessing they floated Wilson's name out there, Huff's name, and even Pettitte's name. There was some Ensberg speculation as well. They're in a tough spot because on one hand the team hasn't really played all that great this year (duh), but on the other, it's Roger's last year probably and most of us have learned that you never count this team out.
I see no quote from McLane in your article. For someone who's so sure that he whines all the time, you're having a hard time finding an article where he does.
if we weren't gonna be able to buy...we should've had some selling worked out. The Cards got Jorge Sosa also. I think by being stagnant, we've fallen even further behind everyone than we already were and are now really out of it. Because of that, we should have sold this year for the future.. Wilson, Huff if he doesn't wanna re-sign for sure (or if we don't want him for sure), Clemens if he really believes he'd have been better off elsewhere.. Willy T, Lidge, Ensberg if the value was there at all.
I remember when Drayton said this. And he decided the way to make more money was to put more fans in the seats by signing big name players who fans come to watch. And he has steadily lost less money every year, while the team value has increased a huge amount. I'm guessing he loses a little more this year, but he's come to like the 40,000+ attendance. He'll sign another big name next year.
that's what's funny.....the article is from 2002. payroll has gone nowhere but up since then. significantly.
You do realize this was said in the context of a labor dispute between owners to enact stronger revenue-sharing and had nothing to do with payroll in regards to the team or the fans or signing players, right?
Having figures does not equate to whining. If he's asked about payroll stuff, he answers it. The question is where the whining is.
Just for my own info, how many more links do I have to post about Drayton whining about payroll and losing money?
justice was on the radio the other morning. lance asked him how often drayton talked about payroll. justice said you have to corner him to get him to talk about money. nowhere in anything you've posted so far do i read whining.
Whoa, whoa, calm down. Don't blow a gasket. I'm not sure why I'm being labeled a Drayton hater here. I didn't say the Astros wouldn't spend this offseason. I said we don't know if they will and I personally think it might even be wise to not overspend but just bring some of the guys up now that some of the veterans are leaving. Calm down. I think Drayton's been a great owner. Just because I don't lick his balls in every post doesn't mean I hate him.
