Right, that was my point in my original tongue in cheek post. It's impossible to blame the City of Houston for, say, the idiots in Bastrop (and several towns along 290) not altering the traffic lights on 71 to expedite the flow of traffic. That's all on the DPS. And to say that it's the City of Houston's responsibility to formulate & coordinate a REGIONAL evacuation plan covering citizens of 10 or so counties travelling across 4 or 5 major freeway corridors through dozens upon dozens of other counties in other regions of Texas is beyond ridiculous. That's primarily the State's job. Ordering an evacuation & putting the proper infrastructure in place *across the region* are 2 very, very different propositions. One may be the responsibility of the mayor/counties, but the other is sure as hell a State job.

I think most people realize that it was a cluster**** and trust that all parties involved, from the state to local authorities, have worked to make a similar future situation run just a tad more smoothly.

This thread has gotten a bit ridiculous. Yay Austin! Boo Houston!

Jesus Buck, how can that be any less difficult than telling people to stay home because there were some dead birds? WE ARE TALKING ABOUT DEAD BIRDS HERE! They had to tell a couple thousand people to stay at home one day. That is serious business. I don't understand how you can mock such a serious situation and try to compare it to evacuating hundreds of thousands of people in one day. THERE WERE DEAD BIRDS!! Houston is so stupid. Geez.

I've got full rolls of toilet paper in all four of my bathrooms. After reading this thread, I'm fully prepared to go and wipe my ass.

Am I right to assume that the birds were pigeons?

Comparing prepared for a much smaller scale event to unprepared for a much larger scale even is a simple concept. Why does it elude you?

Seems rather odd that over 60 birds would die of "natural causes"...but oh well. Crisis averted.

The city of Austin is entrusting AGGIES with a potential public health crisis?

Yeah, I think I might have to cancel my travel plans to my sister's house in Round Rock next month...
