Development coach for one of the most vet teams in NBA?

Morey joking or something more insidious happening here?

Vanterpool experience and even demeanor sound a lot like D'Antoni.

Except without the revolutionary offense or ability to coach top 10 postseason defense.

He could be actually interviewing him for the head assistant job. Maybe that's what this interview really is. I'm just guessing.

That or this is a sign that we 'bout to blow this **** up.

Due diligence and giving someone a chance to impress the Rockets. Sometimes a candidate "wows", look at Silas...... he was far from a favorite, but by the end of his meeting with Morey, the GM wanted him as his head coach...... he went as far as to pitch Silas and Hollins as an associate head coach. Ultimately Alexander went another way.

Also, he is considered a good defensive coach that relies on analytics and is open minded, so he isn't a shock interview.

He won Internationally and in the DLeague as a HEAD COACH. Joerger and Finch are the closest things to Nurse if that’s what they want.

Not that impressed with his defense actually.

At least Silas was part of most efficient offense in NBA history.

Nurse was known, but he wasn't exactly coveted. He would have eventually gotten a job but he wasn't on the "short, short list" of guys teams wanted.

There is a lot of truth that retread coaches are retread coaches because they have flaws.

With a younger coach there is certainly more risk, but more reward as well. Morey has in the past said the ideal is to "find" a younger coach that has all the qualities needed and have them lead your team for a decade or more... the problem is finding one.

He had the Timberwolves defense ranked in the top 10 before trades and injuries. His defenses in Portland were mediocre, but how much of that is the limitations of their roster? He is an expert at forcing long 2's.

I am not saying Vanterpool is who I want the Rockets to pick. I like Silas and Finch more and probably Unseld. I am just saying he is a strong head coaching candidate and isn't out of left field.

I don't see Vanderpool getting the job but I do like him. He has potential to be a great coach in this league. I don't see him as the coach we need right now when you look at the state that we are currently in.

Nurse was also an assistant on the Raptors and he was able to make an impression on organization, enough so that ousting their COTY was painless.

Nurse is a great X's and O's guy, extremely creative especially on defense. Which is interesting because his space and pace offensive system destroyed the D-League.

The one coach whose Vipers team remind me of Nurse's the most is Joseph Blair. Like Nurse, his team's were killers in postseason.

Everyone talks about Finch or even Brase, why not Blair?

I would like Blair about as much as most other candidates. His name hasn’t been mentioned much If at all. Brase and Finch were actually part of the staff here, Blair never spent time here. Maybe he can join the next staff.

I touched on this in another post saying I believe Silas should and will be the guy we go with.

He’s experienced enough to win now and young enough to lead this team into the post James and Russ era.

Joerger is the youngest candidate with any traction. Just a strange factoid. Ty Lue is even younger but I suspect he’s going to LA.

The positive attitude/hard work/max effort stuff I'm hearing about this guy really makes me think Tilman will like him.

Nurse is just a very well rounded coach, keeps a great attitude and really just works hard.

As far as X's and O's, consider that Finch is the one that put Nurse in charge of a defense for the first time. Before that Nurse was primarily an offensive coach. Also, a large part of what Nurse does on offense... is what he learned from Finch. Indeed, when Nurse got the job with the Raptors, he wanted to hire Finch as associate head coach in charge of the offense. The only reason it didn't happen was because Finch was under contract.

With no disrespect to Blair or anyone else, if you want an X's and O's coach, you will not find one better than Chris Finch on the offensive side of the ball. He is responsible for a lot of the things that have become popular in the league, such as the corner 3 and you can still see his finger prints on what the Rockets do now. He also can adapt to any offensive style.

He is responsible for the Nuggets inside out offense that they still run. He is the one that made Cousins and Davis work together with guards that could not shoot. He is just THAT good on offense.

He isn't perfect. He is known as someone that will question authority and has a bit of a pirate reputation because he does not do everything conventionally and he will try a lot of different things.
