I believe you draft based on need but you don't draft based on need at the expense of acquiring top notch talent (ie: Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan). 1 offensive lineman drafted in the 1st round isn't going to be the difference between us winning and losing games next year. Taking a guy like Reggie Bush AND making improvements in the offensive line and defense will. I think Reggie Bush is the difference between a Domanick Davis 7-10 yd carry and a 20 yd carry. The difference is huge. I don't believe its an either or situation. I think you can do both with the right management and commitment.

So by this logic the Rockets should have drafted Jay Williams since he was rated higher than Yao and was "true" point guard and we could have slid Steve Francis over to the off guard position?

The Rockets needed a center and they drafted a center. They drafted for their need and it looks like its worked out pretty well.

You're right one OL pick isn't going to drastically change the line play, but its a start with a stud OL. specially since there are only so many premiere LTs in the game. The Texans have looked every offseason for help on the line, Orlando Pace at least gave them a sniff and overpaying for Ross Verba wasn't going to get it done. OL are probably the most difficult FA's to acquire because most teams try to keep their OL together. If you're going to build a good line its going to have to be through the draft.

Who's to say that Bush or Leinart are going to come in and be successful in the NFL. I'd take my chances with the stud OL than with the stud RB, especially since I already have a good RB in the stable.

The Rockets didn't draft Yao just because he was a center....they drafted Yao because he's 7'6" and the best player on the board, and he had the potential to dominate the game being that size along with his skills. It happened to fill that need for a center, but just being a Center wasn't the sole reason for taking him. Thinking back to that draft...opinion was pretty mixed on whether to take Yao or Williams...it wasn't a slam dunk either way...but I think most teams in the Rockets position even back then would have taken Yao over Jay Williams. Think about this...if the Rockets had the #1 pick in '92....Would you take Shaq and move Hakeem to PF or would you take someone who you knew was a lesser player. I would have taken my chances with a Shaq/Hakeem frontcourt in a second. The Texans took OL Tony Boselli in the expansion draft....he didn't exactly pan out, did he. Offensive linemen aren't exactly always sure things either....remember Brad Hopkins w/ the Oilers? I can't count how many time he got beat and Moon or Carlson got sacked.

Lose the rest of the games and draft Reggie Bush.

The consensus pick (by most experts; not that I gave a damn what they had to say I wanted Yao) was Jay Williams leading up to the draft, and Yao was not considered the best player on the board, he was considered the player with the most potential. There were all sorts of questions about Yao, his conditioning, whether or not he would stand the rigors of the NBA mentally and physically.

You're right if the Rockets would have had the 1st pick in 92 they would have picked Shaq and slid Hakeem over to PF. But where are you going to move Davis to? How about TE? You already have a RB who has proved himself with back-to-back 1000 yard seasons. The Texans have given him a good sized raise and extension. Where do put him? And if you trade him what kind of value do you think you are going to get when RB's are a dime a dozen in the NFL? What guarantee do you have that Reggie Bush is going to be better or even succeed in the NFL?

Boselli was damaged goods when he got here and the Texans took a calculated risk in picking Boselli, they also took him because Jacksonville allowed the Texans to take both Seth Payne and Gary Walker. Yeah it sucks that Boselli didn't pan out, but thats what happens when you roll the dice. But look at the overall picture, what was Casserly trying to build from the get go? He was looking to build an offensive line, thats why Boselli was the first pick, they took Ryan Young and signed Steve McKinney, all OL players. Thats the plan they need to get back on track with building an offensive line that is capable of giving David Carr time to throw the ball and allowing wide receivers to get open.

I'm not saying D'Brickshaw Ferguson, Eric Winston, Marcus McNeil or Jonathan Scott are sure things in the NFL, but you have no need for a RB, this is no longer an expansion team, the Texans should draft for their biggest need which is OL and at the top of the draft they have their best chance of doing that.

Carr needs to get rid of the ball quicker. His vision takes him forever to see. You can put Manning on the same line as the Texans and he will still deliver. Carr just gets nervous and he'll just give up on the play by running sideways.

well i just firmly believe we should draft bush. i say this because we have issues at OL and wide receiver. the problem with the WRs is that for the most part... they are terrible at getting open and running routes. this is a lot of the time a contribtor to why carr gets sacked so many times. if we take the best natural, innate, freakish talent in bush... he could run quick routes to get open more quickly so carr can get rid of the ball in a more timely manner. this would also take pressure off of johnson to always be open. Its not just the OL's fault carr gets sacked.... he doesnt have anyone to throw to. this should give him more options... and we still keep davis as RB. having a dual threat with davis and bush could be intresting as well.

then we do need to concentrate on improving the OL. i dont care how we do this... whether its the draft or free agency... it just needs to be addressed.

As i said before... i thought vince young would be a great talent to have as a QB because he has a great ability to spread the offense out, which scatters the opponents defense... this is when he starts to manipulate the other team. Vince young is much more elusive than carr and has a natural ability to stay away from quicker defensive players... for god's sake... vince runs over linebackers and safties in college... stiff arms the opposition all the time. i dont know many QBs that can do that. he is 6'5 and 235 lbs. he isnt your everday QB. not only that but he has shown an increase in performance every year he has stepped out on the floor. he is the leader of a championship team... he took the liberty in the offseason last year to get the entire offense out on the field everyday to practice running plays. He is a gifted player with his head on correct... he only cares about his team. hard to find that these days.

Do these threads get backed up somewhere? Because one side or another, here in about a couple or so years, will have serious opportunity to rub it in the other's face. :D

A team with a great O-Line and DDavis in the backfield could take your average ClutchFans poster as their QB and be at least .500. If you can run the ball consistently in the NFL, you can win.
