You guys can argue all you want about how much of this is Carr's fault vs. the offensive line. The real debate is whether we should keep Carr, regardless of the fault. If he has lost the respect of the other players, he must go. Simple as that. With that in mind, there are 10 games left in the season and these games are a long tryout for next year. If our passing game doesn't improve a lot before the season ends, and Carr's body language doesn't improve, the Texans will not pay his roster bonus (or whatever it is) and he will walk.

I don't believe things can stay completely in the tank for 10 more games. Carr's performance and our overall offense will improve. How much? Who knows? Regardless, we are getting the point of no return (with Carr) where both he and the team will need a fresh start apart from each other.

Right now, I'm in the "Carr must go" camp, but our offensive regression from last year is not his fault. It's on Casserly, Capers and Palmer.

To the original poster, can we agree that with or with out Carr, drafting or by some other means aqcuiring some quality lineman would not be a waste; can we atleast agree on that. I KNOW we need O-Lineman but at this point I could not pass on Bush or Leinart, but if I did go in their direction in the first I would be stuck praying that there are quality lineman in the 2nd round and beyond. Fact is passing on lineman for anyone is a luxury I'm not sure we can afford. You are right it is looking like a 3-5 year plan to turns things around but IMO getting quality lineman certainly expedites the process. I believe Carr's option is for three years, if so, and we are in agreement that that is how long at the minimum it will take to turn this team around why not sign his extension and start building the line while Carr and not another rookie takes the lumps, in three years if Carr still sucks with a decent line then dump him. There is no benefit to bringing in someone else until the line is fixed. If the Leinart and Bush frenzy is going to be as big as it seems we will be in the ideal position to capitilize off of it and still pick up the number one or two lineman in this draft. That would be the ideal scenario for our GM, let's just hope it's not Casserly. But that is another issue that hopefully will be fixed soon.

What I see is that most of the time the O-line plays poorly and Carr doesn't have enough time. But when they do give him time, he will make bad decisions more then he makes good ones. It is a chicken vs. egg argument at this point, but I think Carr is damaged goods now. Maybe it is because Carr was beaten down so bad, but either way, he is not the answer we need at QB. I agree that with the O-line is a top priority though. But until that gets fixed do we need to get those option years on Carr's contract? Do we just go with Banks or some other vet until we get the line fixed?

    Are you kidding?

My initial reaction to that play was that it must be nice to have six or seven seconds in the pocket to let your receivers get open. His "backpedal" happened after about five seconds of standing in the pocket untouched. It was a nice move to back pedal and avoid the rush, but the play was already well underway at that point. Part of the reason Carr goes down so easily is that it happens so quickly that receivers don't have time to make their moves and get open.

Do we all agree that whether or not it's David Carr playing QB next season, the first item of business has to be improving pass blocking???

And by the way...I've said it before, I'll say it again..the defense is fortunate the offense is this bad, because it distracts from just how sucky this defense truly is.

I've never seen a team regress this much. In any sport. Not that I can remember, anyway.

Keep Carr....draft Reggie Bush #1 and nothing but Offensive and Defensive Linemen afterwards.

Watch it again, the defense broke through the line within 2 seconds. Six or seven seconds, are you kidding? Toomer ran a slant, he made one move and ran across the endzone, the entire play took maybe 6 or 7 seconds thanks to manning buying the time. If you really want to debate this, I have it TIVO'd otherwise we can all just accept that you were exagerrating. (and I meant Mannning agains the Broncos not cowboys....)

The only way we will know is for them to bench Carr and see how the team responds to a new guy. I do not think Carr is the guy for us. If banks comes in and looks THIS bad then i'll admit that I may have been wrong, but we will never know until Capers takes a chance.

I can be tired of the sky being blue, but darned if that sucker still isn't blue. Carr is not the problem, regardless of how you perceive it.

Here, here. This offseason was a complete failure for the Texans' management--dismantling what *wasn't* the problem while letting the *real* problem just sit there and get worse.

yeah, i don't understand that at all. i'm baffled. i was baffled then, but i always assume the guys running the teams know more about what they need than i do. but they really screwed this one up.

YES!! I was waiting for that response when I read that. Eli was well protected until the end when he rolled out. By then, he had 3 receivers trying to get open on that side of the field alone. Also, that pass was anything but spectacular. It seemed that Eli just tossed it up there and Toomer went forward and got it.

That led me to my second point. Have you seen the coverage that was put on our WRs time after time? Our WRs have no abilities to get open. Whether Carr gets 0.5 of a second or 8 seconds, it's nearly impossible for the likes of Corey and Jabar to get wide open for 99% of the game. I still feel that the Texans need to try some sort of wide spread offense with a run and shoot sort of style. One might argue that it's sending Carr onto a Kamakazi Aircraft, but I think that it might be beneficial to him to have more choices. Carr needs to learn a few things. One is pocket presence. The second is to know that ticking clock before you have to throw the ball. Third is decision making and scanning the field faster. Finally, he needs to learn that he can't always try to do it himself. A Run & Shoot like offense would be perfect to test if he still has it. He showed that he could take hits, but he also needs to learn to scan the blitzses sooner. Peyton was great in that aspect. He recognizes the blitzses before the ball's even snapped. If Carr has more options (3-4 receivers), there won't be half as many double teamed WRs and it might spread out the run game for DD some as well.

Yes, but this is only one play. How do the total performances of the two lines comare? There really isn't a comparison.

And additionally, David Carr does not *have* to be Peyton Freaking Manning. To point out that he's not the best QB in the NFL does not mean that he is the problem. Your sorry-assed jr. hi O-line is the problem.

I didn't see the game, but only the highlights, so its hard for me to judge...However, if he isn't performing, I see nothing wrong with benching him...It may be the only thing that can make him respond positively...

You can give us the DENVER OLINE and I still say DAVID CARR with be a BRIAN GRIESE!!!!!! for that team ........

Yeah I know the Problem is the OLINE but I say FIX IT!! without DAVID CARR!

We can get Orlando Pace, Jonathan Ogden and Carr will take us 7-9 at best!
He's not Vick, Eli, or Palmer so what I'm saying is why fix the OLINE ONLY when he's the PROBLEM also.

I'm not saying DONT FIX the OLINE and saying FIX THE OLINE and put someone else back there too.

The offensive "literally" line is the root cause for all of this. Carr has "0" confidence in it. To make matters worse, we let 2 top guys go on defense in Jamie Sharper and Aaron Glenn....did practically nothing to the offensive line. McNair needs to totally clean out the Texans front office and coaching staff and start over. We were duped this offseason. Our offensive line has r****ded the development of David Carr. Its a joke. In order for Carr to reach his potential...he has to have more than 3 seconds to throw the football before he's running for his life. I don't care if the Texans QB was Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, or Bret Favre. They each would have the save record as David Carr does right now with this offensive line.

IMO, the problems with the Texans' offense rank from worst to no-problem-at-all as follows:

    1) Stinking sorry freaking Toilet Tissue we call an O-Line
    2) Coaching--who's calling this crap? What kind of plan is this? Where the hell are they headed?? They may have answered this one, but the jury is still out.
    3) Receivers *suck*. Can't get open, dropping the damn ball when they finally *do* get open. Did you see Mathis drop that ball on the sideline yesterday? Every time I watch this team, it takes 20 plays for one of these jokers to get open only to see them fumble the ball like my 8-year old female cousin.
    4) Carr needs to mature. If the other factors weren't so dispicable, we'd be looking at a QB who was on his way to being a very good NFL QB (but not an elite one).
    5) DD is not a problem at all.

I don't know where the TE fits into all this.

No one can reasonably conclude that Carr is Griese or that he isn't Eli or Palmer until Carr is in a similar situation to those players (i.e. has a real team around him). The Texans made a serious investment in Carr, and it would be foolish to give up on that investment until they are completely convinced it will fail. And although we get that you don't like Carr, most reasonable fans (and the front office) know that you can't make any kind of final judgment on a player until he's in a better situation than this.

you realize Jim McMahon won a Super Bowl, right? that Trent Dilfer has a Super Bowl ring, too, right?

i'm not saying David Carr is some great QB. i'm saying it doesn't take a great QB to be a great team. but it absolutely takes an OL better than this to be a good team.

i'm not advocating absolutely keeping Carr. but i disagree with the notion that they can't win with him.

    I can agree with that.

But I will say that I've watched Carr over the past 4 years (every game) and if I were a coach i woudn't want the guy on my team. Just from a talent evaluation standpoint, I don't think he has what it takes. I really don't. I don't think Carr has any confidence in the O-line nor do I think the O-line has any confidence in Carr.

Then if you were a coach, this right here would be your responsibility. We're all grown men here--and I don't give a rat's hind parts *who* you have or don't have confidence; you better damn well do your part like a man and block your guy. Carr is playing tough. The O-Line are the ones looking like little girls in ballet class out there.
