Not if we want to trade for someone worth more than one of those contracts but less than 15mm, or if we take back a player with a bad contract in addition to the superstar. Not criticizing the move, I just think it's interesting that he's giving up a small amount of trade flexibility to save some money. Personally I'd rather not have THIS year of all years be the one we pay the tax for. Our team isn't good enough to justify that kind of payroll.
The round pick has to be in the 51-55 range. The Clippers have to be the 6th-10th best team in the league. When has that ever happened? Morey has never drafted anybody good in the 51+ range. There's a big drop when you get past 50. When you get that far down, those players almost never make it a rotation players in the league. Leunen(54th) and Newley(54th) are his previous picks in that range. He hoped they would develop overseas. They still aren't good enough for the NBA, after 2-3 years.
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/bk/bkn/7128811.html More details on the trade. Seems Rockets only paid $1 mil cash. Guess Toronto sees Andersen as having some value as a player and was not simply trying to pocket some cash (up to the $315K difference between what the Rockets are allowed to pay in cash and Andersen's salary + next year's guaranteed amount). Rockets save $4 million, get an open roster spot and a $2.5 mil traded player exception.
Amazing, can't believe that's all we had to pay. I would have never believed someone would have taken him off our hands.
But then picking up Chuck Hayes' option makes no sense, if the master plan was to get under the tax threshold.
This. There is no "master plan" regarding getting below the tax threshold. The Rockets are going for it this year. If no star player can be acquired, then sure, they'll at least TRY to get closer to or below the tax threshold. But who's to say that they CAN? It's not like Morey already has a pre-arranged contingency trade plan in place with another team to dump $9M in salary.
and pple thought he'd be the starting center last year. steve franchise, brent 'bones' barry, and now DA. Morey's track record for signing old washed up free agents isn't the best. has some misses there. hope miller ain't his next one. i honestly think he's gonna be. guess you can mark that.
People shouldn't view this as trying to get down to the luxary tax line, David Andersen has no role on this team, so who in their right mind would spend 4 million dollars for nothing, it's just common sense financially, ann we needed to trim the roster anyhow . We basically gave him away, the only reason we got the protected pick was because we had to receive something in return.
