I'm not a fan of a reader's vocabulary, how do you pronounce his name? JURR-gur JOR-gur Jackie Jormpjormp?
What they're wanting to do is spawn head coaches across the NBA the same way they are developing players. I think both Joerger and Finch come here and I think both of them eventually become head coaches in the NBA. And we'll already have coaches planted in Rio coaching the same system that we can replace them with if McHale continues successfully as head coach. And then someone is finally going to become our Tex Winter and Phil Jackson. McHale, Finch, Joerger, John Lucas.....that's a durn good staff.
I like to think I follow basketball pretty faithfully, but I really can't say I am familiar with assistant coaches on mid-line teams. Point being that is just observation conjecture and a hope to get information or at least a conversation. My background/prejudices are that I love good defense, miss JVG, was much more impressed with Adelman than I expected to be, but hated watching opponents get to the rack so easily on us. And no it is not all because we had a short center. They weren't scoring over Hayes, they were going in uncontested. Joerger has been with Memphis for four years. Really had not thought of Memphis as a top defensive team over the lat four years. Even in this year's playoff run their offense got more press than their defense, but I guess that is typical. I pulled this quote out of HSF09's post... "The Grizzlies led the NBA in steals (9.4) and forced turnovers (16.5), and were second in points off turnovers (19.4). Memphis ranked seventh in blocked shots (5.4)." To me steals and forced turnovers say aggressive defense. While flashy & fun and able to turn a game around, I think that often leads to easy baskets for the opponent. For those of you old enough, think Benny Anders vs Clyde Drexler. Both had a lot of steals with UH, but if Benny tried and failed, it usually led to a basket. If Clyde failed, he held his position. I don't know how Memphis looks. Anybody know? Though I will say 16.5 forced turnovers seems like a lot. Again I don't know what is normal or where this ranks, anybody else know. I think the best defense is the 'stay between your man and the basket' style. Not flashy, low in stats but i think most successful. I figure the 5.4 blocked shots figure has to come down if we stay with our current lineup, Apparently Joerger did not get a lot out of Thabeet, so my rock bottom expectation for his development is staying right there. All of that sounds lukewarm at best, but fundamentally I do think Morey makes good decisions. So if DM thinks this is the guy, I guess I do too. I'd appreciate any comments by people who are actually familiar with Joerger, his style or his results. Thanks.
I find it interesting that the Rockets are after Dave Joeger to be their top assistant with all the talk about Finch being groomed. Joeger seems to almost be ready to be a head coach so I wonder who is being groomed, afterall?
I wouldn't write off Thabeet's developmentl with Joerger as the lead assistant. It seems that McHale would handle Thabeet's development. Morey seems to be picking the entire assistant coaching staff and not allowing McHale to choose. He is picking coaches to complement each other's talents Defense philosophy and system (Joerger or Mike Malone) Post player development and mentoring (McHale did a good job with Love, Jefferson, and Garnett) Offensive system(Finch) Thabeet is still moldable. He only finished his 2nd season with the league.
This maybe the 1st Rocket Coach where we hear more about the assistance than the MAIN COACH [Head Coach doesn't even sound right anymore] Rocket River
You could be right!(see last paragraph below) As previously reported, Joerger to meet with the Houston Rockets.
Jerry Sichting <--- Ishtbag from the 1986 team. <iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/TLztLLPjyjY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Was the beginning of Sampson's injury Issues I am beginning to hate The Celtics all over again. D*rty %$*%$ Rocket River
You can tell Sichting is a dbag by the way he pronounces his name. Definitely trying to hide his German heritage.
I think this new offensive defensive coordinator thing is awesome. McHale may not be the best coach, but he is a great motivator. Finch and Joeger would be amazing hires and i think we will have a better record next year. Dont forget guys we have Free Agency too to judge how well we think we're gonna do based on who we get. Both of those assistants have won championships as head coaches, and would more than compensate for McHale's deficiency
While there may be doubts based on McHale's coaching and GM history, there is no doubt that he will be good at player communication, player development (especially big men -- think Kevin Garnett and Kevin Love), leadership, and empathy with the GM (having been one himself). Rather than calling all the shots, I think Morey is trying to help McHale to be successful by getting him the best possible assistant coaches with complementary strengths. As the full picture of what they have in mind for the full coaching staff emerges, this whole thing begins to make a lot of sense. Maybe we'll start to hear the old slogan again? (eg: In Morey we trust?)
Found this by accident: http://www.bismarcktribune.com/sports/local/article_1f497658-8b24-11e0-ab93-001cc4c03286.html Joerger not being under contract should make it a little easier to get him join the Rockets I'd assume.
Rockets will meet with Joerger on Friday, Mevlin Hunt over the weekend: http://www.myfoxhouston.com/dpp/sports/nba/110601-rockets-to-meet-with-nuggets'-hunt
