Like the Sonics/Thunder GM made his own luck by having Portland stupidly draft Greg Oden's brittle a$$.

Although I'll admit he did well with Westbrick, The Beard, and Ibaka, he'd be Golden State without Durant.

Hey I was saying draft Durant all along...can't help it if Portland keeps making stupid decisions.

Shaq in his prime was signed away from another team as a free agent. As were LeBron and Bosh. So a plan to develop a first star (DMo?) while retaining cap flexibility to attract a second star as a free agent is a viable course of action.

Beginning with the 2013-14 season, teams will realistically be able to only carry two max contract players without have a completely gutted roster. The three star model will soon be the two star model, and only two will be needed to win a championship, with the rest of the roster consisting of players under reasonable contracts.

UT homerism aside , big men are more valuable than perimeter players. Portland already had Brandon Roy and Aldridge at that point. In hindsight it looks stupid but on that draft night they made the right pick. There are 6 -10 premier perimeter players in the NBA. How many legit 7' centers are there? Since Shaq retired Yao and Dwight Howard are the only ones . It is easier to build a team around a legit big man than it is to build one around a guard. It was not a stupid decision at that time.

There were more than just UT homers that questioned that pick. There were injury concerns prior to draft for Oden. It wasn't like he had a clear bill of health and then got injuries after starting NBA. He had injury plagued career.

    Both looked great in college.

    In this case, me, too.

I couldn't believe the "always draft big". I knew as should anyone that Durant was gonna be something else.

I think it was obvious. Almost as obvious as Lebron was minus the body size issue they had. The Greg Oden thing? I knew at best he could be a good big guy. Not Superstar like Durant had the potential to be.
