Rockets GM Daryl Morey was on 1560 this morning and I thought this was a very honest interview -- seemed to let his guard down a bit. He was asked what has been the disappointment this season and he said the 2009 Lottery pickups of Hasheem Thabeet, Jonny Flynn, Terrence Williams and Jordan Hill.

Morey also said Patterson's path back from bone spurs surgery has been slow. He said he thought "for sure" that Patrick Patterson was going to "take a good 25% step forward this year but unfortunately he has gone the other way pretty much due to injury." He feels once Patrick gets going that the bench will be strong again.

It says a lot about your players when your GM is so open about his disappointment in having taken a flier on you.

There he goes again, treating our players like assets and publicly viewing his opinions! All four of those guys are going to have their feelings hurt, and play worse, and DaDakota is going to be smug over this...

Oh noes, now other GM's know that our assets aren't as good as Morey used to trick them into believing!!!

In all seriousness, definitely candid, but not exactly anything surprising. He's just saying what anybody even remotely paying attention clearly knows.

I really like his honesty, and really wish he would not do that in public....

    Thanks Clutch.

It's kind of sad that for all the 09 busts that we've acquired, it's not talent that they are lacking, but the mentality.

Jordan Hill has no focus, Thabeet has no fire, T-Will is wild, Flynn needs better bball IQ.

It's disheartening to know that these players have the talent, but neither the heart nor the focus to bring themselves to the next level.

I don't really have a problem what he said. I thought he was being kind, actually.

And suppose he said something like this: "They're working hard and we still have hopes that they can break through and be an impact player for us."

Wouldn't the response of many people here (not necessarily you) be that he's just feeding the public some PR baloney?

Why not? Apparently praising and hoping didn't work out for those guys. a dose of public criticizing might wake one or two guys up to work harder or play smarter. If that still doesn't work, nothing can save them.

I like that he was honest. maybe it will light a fire under some of those guys ass. Morey is the boss and he needs to get he's employees in line.

    Exactly this.

Jordan Hill strikes me as a player who's trying McHale's patience with having to constantly stoke a fire under him. The dude's concentration is better than Joey Dorsey's, but not by much (and Dorsey was NEVER paying attention to S***).

I guess what DD is saying is that if he doesn't have something honestly positive or constructive to say about a particular player on his team, he shouldn't publicly comment on it. That's fair.

But I still like to have a small glimpse into what he's thinking. As a fan who's curious about what the Rockets goals are, I appreciate that sort of honesty.

I am glad to hear that Morey thinks just as little about these guys as we do. I was starting to get worried that he thought these guys were actually going to pan out. I never like the idea of taking someone else's trash. I believe if they can't crack the rotation on a crappy team then why on earth would anyone else want them? They have sunk to the bottom of this team with Chase not far behind. We are about to have all 5 of the 09ers relegated to the end of the bench. I think Morey should try to dump all of them before next season and those he can't get rid of should not have their extension picked up for next season. This time next year we should 5 extra spots to allow other players to compete for time. Hopefully, we won't have the same outcome.

I don't like YOUR honesty OR that you say many things in public... but then again... you're no Morey.

So what if they haven't performed well? Dude shouldn't be that honest or public, in my opinion. He should keep it "strictly business." After all, that is what a GM should do... leave opinions OUT of the business talk.

 I am not sure if he was sharing the sentiments of everyone in the front office, or just his own.

I don't see anything wrong with what he said:

He was hoping they'd earn playing time....and so far they haven't.

The boxscore tells that story...I didn't see a criticism of their talent or character in his comments.

I think your right, nothing else is working for them. Sometimes a good dose of reality will help them get their head straight, it's worth a try.

He probably realizes that their trade value is pretty much shot anyway. What team would view Hill/Williams/Thabeet/Flynn anything more than filler at this stage?

Exactly, I think a GM should be a little less honest in the public and keep some of that in house.

That way if another team showed any interest he could plausibly deny and say that they just didn't have a spot for him - instead of him admitting publicly that they sucked.

LOL....even if it is true, IMO, that sort of stuff should be kept in house.

It's not going to hurt the trade value of those guys. Any GM in the league knows what they're worth anyway (which is essentially not very much at all). If anything it should light a fire under their asses and get them to work harder to break the rotation.

    It's all mind games.

PS. I wonder how Daryl would feel if Les came on the radio and said the trade for TWill sucked, especially since he didn't develop and now we are losing our first round pick in a deep draft?

That to me, would be just as bad as what DM is doing here.
