Morey is talking about next year, not long term goal. Of course they want him to be a starter, even a star, in his career. However, given that the guy didn't play his rookie year, a reasonable goal at least for the beginning of the next season would be to get into the rotation.

I'm going to hold off on feeling doom and gloom until after July 15th, if there has been no splash by then. I think our break to get a star or potential star is just around the corner. We have an expendable near star in Lowry and 2-3 first round picks to use to move up in the draft or trade for a star. The reason to be optimistic is that this is a poor year to try to draft a good PG, so a team with a high pick whose most pressing need is PG (i.e. like New Orleans) will no doubt be talking to us.

This year, there are at least 5 players at the top of the draft that can develop into stars: Davis, Drummond, Kidd-Gilchrist, Robinson and Beal. I could see us sending Lowry and the picks to New Orleans to get a top five pick. Of course, it all starts tonight by beating them with our scrub lineup so that they don't drop in the draft.

If we trade for a top 5 pick instead of an established star, then I could envision Les giving Morey the go ahead to tank next year to get another high draft pick. Under that scenario, Martin, Scola and Dalembert could be jettisoned.

Yeah, with this year being a shortened season Les had an opportunity lose less money by sucking this year and profit off a viable franchise player like A Davis if they won the 1st pick.

That's not the reality though. Especially if you're talking about the guys taken at #14.
Go through the list of past year's draft and you'll see that there are a ton of guys taken in the lottery who're not even serviceable role players.

Kind of like Adleman keeping Yao to 20 minutes playing time. Coach was all aboard that one and it worked out perfectly. Doing that with every starer is completely plausible. Actually, Morey should have just fired Mchale and coached the team himself. He is the GM damn it!

In my opinion Morris should be challenging Parsons hard for the starting SF position NEXT season instead of challenging Budinger as the 8th man.

And that's what people don't realize - you don't need no.1 pick to be able to get your franchise player. Rubio was no. 5, Val was no. 5, DeMarcus was no. 5. There are a lot more - Westbrook 4, Love 5 ...

All you need is 3 consecutive years in lottery - two top 5 and one top 7 pick - and if you have a decent gm who's able to recognize talent, which Morey is, you'll get your core to build around.

Even if you're extremely unlucky you'll finish with young, high potential talent. For example Sacramento - got the worst possible pick in 2009 - no. 4 - which ended up being Evens, rookie of the year. Ok, he has fallen off in the last two years, but I think that's a failure of the organisation, not lack of potential of said player. In 2010. again the worst possible pick - no. 5 - which ended up being DeMarcus Cousins, who's transforming into one of the best centers in the league. Failure to develop young players in Sacramento is a whole other thing I don't want to go into right now. They've been horrific in every aspect in recent years.

Bottom line is you don't have to be extremely lucky to get your player, you just need to be there and you'll get him.

I don't think Morey is saying Morris should not challenge for a starting spot. He's just not going to call Morris a contender for a starting spot until he actually shows something.

Never said it doesn't happen. Look at Portland, and look at what happened with a solid coach in Nate McMillan.

In all honesty, If Les & Morey would have hired Bullard's son to coach the team this year I probably would have been excited about it because that means they were going to try and beat the system to get a top draft pick this year.

However, I understand the ramifications that come with it. The players left on Portlands roster that should have been starting were totally fine sitting out the last few weeks of the season. Because it was in the final stretch of the season.

Sitting Luis and Lowry at the START of the season over Flynn and Thabeet would have blown up in their faces , everyone in the lockeroom would be killing each other, and it would have destroyed their credibility going forward.

He reps DMC also... And I'm sure the Rockets would be interested in him...

Bumping a thread that is older than your membership to make an most entirely irrelevant point? How is this a thing?
