Jeez. All this for a moment's spasm of compassion for Hong Kong. I didn't realize how "big a deal" this is until today, really. Birthday weekend: my mom, me, and my stepdad's sister on three consecutive days, so I wasn't paying close attention until this story is at the top of both CNN and Huffpost. (Probably foxnews, too, but my eyes would melt if I went to that site.)
Happy birthday to you all. The more publicity this gets, the best. The only way to keep the NBA's greed in check is public embarassment and outrage.
I know the so-called larger point. I hate the CCP too. But that does not mitigate the dumbness of Morey's tweet. Defending him of doing that in the name of "freedom" is missing the context. I see that a lot of people here refuse to accept that this thing is not just a black and white Authoritarian China vs Free Hong Kong. There is a large number of HK residents who hate BOTH the CCP AND the rioters. They are mourning the destruction of their city. They don't need high horse foreigners to add fuel to the chaos.
Two things, first, I think if we always said that we can't criticize other countries because of problems in our country then nothing would ever get done. USA was a F'd up place in the 40s for many groups yet it still wasn't as bad as what was going on in Germany at the time. Second, the difference here is that in the USA on all the things you mentioned there is push back by the US citizens and US politicians to be better...because we are allowed to criticize our own government. That's a huge difference! It means that things can get better and likely will given time. For China, that's not the case, I mean look at what has happened here, they are trying to punish a non-chinese citizen for talking about their politics.
The Chinese government acting like children over a tweet doesn't help their case that this isn't an easy black and white issue. Stop bootlicking for them. HK is just one of several massive atrocities from the government such as imprisoning 2 million humans and forcing them to convert away from their religion.
Morey owes no one an apology. China’s government is nothing but communist dictatorship and how’ve there throwing a fit over a tweet, worse then Kim jong un
See, you are still focusing on China. I am talking about HK. Wasn't Morey's tweet about HK? He didn't know he was taking side on a very messy problem for the HKers. I said somewhere else. I would have applauded Morey if he outright talked about the wider human rights abuses in China. Instead, he picked a controversial thing that was divisive for the people of HK.
I love Morey's response. He apologized for offending you but he's not backing down from his opinion. Respect.
I tend to agree that Morey shouldn't have made the tweet. Unless he was fully prepared to go to bat for something major, stick to the sidelines. But regardless, the toothpaste is out of the tube and this singular issue has brought attention to a much greater issue. An authoritarian country using it's economic influence to silence critics abroad and I can't for the life of me see how any American can be OK with that.
They didn't need to know to the exact science of microscopic orgasms to know how to pass on smallpox. Colonist even documented their intent in their journals. One of U.S.'s earliest form of biological warfare.
