No doubt, but I just think he's better suited as back-up, because I think he can be more effective in limited mins (although he was real good in that philly playoff game when D12 was suspended). I wonder how much interest there actually is in Gortat out there. It's not like the Magic are gonna break the bank to resign him. I just don't want the Rockets to overpay for him. If Yao ever comes back, he can Gortat can split the mins at center. That wouldn't be bad.
i understand but i dunno if Morey is really pursuing him then maybe there is something to him and his skills? You dont really see Morey that aggressive in his FA signings at all. He is much more aggressive on trades and draft day in general. I dont remember him really going after anyone hard in free agency except Rashard Lewis and that was more of a token gesture than an actual pursuit since it was to appease the fans.
Morey strikes again! That and the use of Twitter and Gmail account is genius. Nice to have a guy willing to do whatever it takes.
I guess Brent Barry and SF3 doesn't count much since they didn't do much. This will probably the most significant free agent signing for Morey yet, especially with Yao's situation.
that was with the LLE and he wasnt a marquee FA name out there I am assuming Morey is coming at Gortat with near or the full MLE and Gortat is on many teams radars after his past season.
good point, but barry is at least 25 years older than gortat. plus von was deserving of those minutes.
exactly the barry move was to help the team but i guess he had less in the tank than Morey had hoped but I think barry was very beneficial in helping Brooks develop early in the season. From what I can understand and the brief conversation I had with morey two years ago about SF is that he didnt really care to sign him and it was more of a move to appease fans and the owner and hopefully get some extra revenue in for that. I mean it was the one time Morey bent over backwards to get rid of him last year.
I speculated about this in post #30 in this thread. The timing of Yao's situation coming to light right before today is sorta peculiar.
given starters minutes, this guy will be a 10+ rebounds and 2+ blocks per game. locking him up for MLE over 4 or 5 years (considering how young he is) will be a steal for every year that he's under contract.
agreed, but that doesn't change yao's situation. i dont think the rockets would drop that news in order to mislead gortat into thinking he's the starter from now on... only to have yao back. not the reputation you want with players and agents. if it helps us land gortat then the timing of the press release was brilliant.
It's not like the Rockets can control Yao's healing process and definitively tell Gortat "Well, you got this many days as the starter until Yao comes back." The Rockets probably don't even know themselves at this moment what will come about from the Yao situation, or what they plan to do with Yao. Just be vague and tell Gortat this can be the opportunity to shine in the NBA as a major contributor/possible starter to a playoff tested team.
Since we have made an offer to Gortat, when is the soonest we can know, does every team wait the 7 days or can the Magic say early that they will not match? Someone please help me out here.
