JJ def. gave his team a lift at times in the Boston series which they desperately needed - and the improvements he's made all feed from that drive to compete he has (and is now starting to make good on). It's neat to see and all I guess - but in critical moments it seems like winning hoops instincts still aren't quite there for guy consistently. That game against Boston where he advanced the ball in the backcourt late in the 4th? They didn't get to advance the ball via a timeout as a result - it felt like quite a blunder after Jameer had to chuck that junky long range 3 (unless I remembered it wrong? sorry). Well, he's still young, hopefully he'll stay hungry for wanting to win. ---- I do hope that Morey / the Rockets take good looks at all the off-season options. Trust they're doing that.
To his credit, Redick definitely has gotten a lot better. At the very least he's completely shed that "spot-up shooter that can do NOTHING else, complete defensive liability" label that permeated his stock going into the 2006 Draft and stuck with him his first three years in the league. He worked hard, he got better, he's an effective contributor....great. The MLE is still waaaayyy too much for a player of Redick's caliber. Plus, even though his defense has improved it's still a wise practice to carry contrasting styles and players on your team at each position. Stacking the SG position with Martin and Redick means we have little defensive muscle at all. Sure, Martin and Redick can both stick with their guys and play pesky, seemingly adequate defense but they also get overpowered by post-up guards and stronger players that take it to the basket. Not exactly an ideal situation to put yourself in defensively and if we're talking about the full MLE here it's enough to make me run for the hills.
A marginal white player who can shoot and make good decisions, what's not to like? Let's give him a max deal instead to show our fans how much we value these traits, and why Chase Budinger can net Randolph and the 6th pick.
Whoa guys i think we're all being a bit irrational lets look at the positives and negatives.. Negatives 1.we already have our token white guy with C bud.. Battier and scola aren't qualified 2. there have been rumors of Reddick being in the closet..now apparently he's engaged.. but if something happens..could be a bit awkward for team chemistry. 3. there are many free agents available besides the big 3 that are far superior to reddick 4. just becauser his defense has gotten better doesnt make him a good defender... considering how piss poor his defense was before, if it hasnt gotten better he wouldnt've gotten any minutes in Orlando. Positive 1. The dude is reliable from behind the arc..we have players that can hit threes but itd be cool to have a specialists off the bench.. i miss jon barry 2. there are rumors that he is in a rap group.. how cool would it be to get a UGK or Trae and Zro song featuring Frat boy reddick... 3. He's hype.. all the no brain rocket fans would be pumped about the signing.. WE GOT THE GOOD WHITE GUY FROM DUKE!>@>!@#$ (enthusiasm goes a long way) 4. Battier and him will get along..although im sure battier is the nicest guy on the team anyways.. he seems like all of our young guy's "cool uncle" 5. signing him will give all of yalls girlfriends a reason to watch rockets basketball with you 6. Although he's not as good as people are making him out to be on this thread.. he's not a BAD player at all, like battier; he doesnt screw things up..he just isnt a guy who can take over a game..hes a role player, a good one..i dont think anyone is saying otherwise.. point being; if we sign him..Cool.. if not, who cares.
Really? I mean maybe I did, I did see a guy driving towards the basket then throw up a floater where hes no that close to the basket , thats all, I did see the same guy passing in pick n roll situation, nothing special. There are probably 50 plays in that clip and 40 of them were J.J Redick shooting open threes. Budinger's highlight reel is way more impressive.
If Morey isn't going to give to the full MLE to Gortat, I can't see him doing that for Reddick. As someone else said, 3years 9 mil maybe. However, he's restricted and I'd be surprised if Orlando would just let him go unless someone just gave him stupid money....and that's ain't going to be Morey. In fact, I think the Gortat situation last year is going to make GMs shy away from trying to steal Reddick. Personally, I think Morey is going to use the MLE to fill in whatever gaps in the rotation may be left after a possible trade. It's insurance. As well,I'm sure the capolgists would tell us that any MLE signing is going to be with lux tax money, basically doubling the cost to us.
We barely have enough minutes at the 2 spot for the guys we already have. But if a trade goes down and we need a solid backup two guard then he is a viable option although he costs more than Morey will want to pay for a backup guard. If I had to guess I would say Budinger is the most likely player to get moved this offseason and that will make room for Taylor to blossom off the bench.
Nah, there were plenty of clips of him passing in non pick and roll situations including a sick inbound alley oop to Gortat. He also drove and showed his playmaking ability by making great passes, layups, and floaters. He is a very good mover around the court and he is good at coming off pick and rolls and shooting the mid-range jumper. All of that was shown in there, maybe you didn't see it.
I'd like to cast my vote for JJ Reddick, if the money is right. If the money is right (3 mil/year or so), why wouldn't we want a guy that would instantly be our best three point shooter off the bench? As stated by others, he's grown beyond being a smaller version of Steve Novak. Not to mention the fact that our offense will work in 4 ways next season: 1. Inside -> Out with Yao 2. Run-n-Gun with the bench 3. Pick-n-Roll/Pop with Brooks/Bigs 4. Slash-n-Kick with Brooks, Lowry, Kevin, etc. All four of those offenses require good three point shooters who can move without the ball to be truly successful. i.e. JJ Reddick. Full disclosure, prior to this season? NOT a fan of his...
Yep, and I noted that stupid play earlier. Not too go off on a tangent, though, and not to bash a Van Gundy brother, since they generally seem like great coaches, but the Magic squad has made enough stupid critical late game errors in the playoffs that you got to believe part of the problem is Stan not focusing on that aspect of the game enough. From letting Fisher hit the three in last year's Finals to the team leaving Ray Allen open at clutch moments this year to the JJ play. I could be wrong, and maybe Stan went over the fact that if a player got a rebound they need to just hold it and call timeout, but I just don't think he focused on that. It's a detail, for sure, but one that was missed. Granted, JJ still needs to be smarter there. I think $3 million could potentially be the upper end of his actual value, but at $3 million you get pretty good player for 20 mpg off the bench. He needs to become a better play-maker generally, but was surprisingly good at it in the 4th quarters of that Boston series - though this could have been because Boston was rotating generally and then would fly at JJ to prevent the open 3 looks that would have gotten the Magic in the game, instead opting to let him create a little bit given his lack of track record in that area. Who knows? All I know is whereas pretty much every backcourt player on the Magic - Jameer, Vince, Barnes, even Rashard, though technically a frontcourt player - disappeared for most of the series, JJ was at least having an impact.
