Naked Lunch...ahhh, that reminds me Jacob's Ladder I haven't scene Requiem. What was so painful about it? Can someone contrast that to The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover? I also did not see Trainspotting
I think those are painful in different ways. There's really only one short scene in Requiem that can compare to all the disturbing stuff in The Cook et al. Requiem, I think, is more disturbing because it's so believable and you start to really get into these characters, all of whom are falling apart in different ways. The performance of the mom character (forget actress just now) is absolutely amazing.
It's just another movie about people sinking into the depths of depravity through drug addiction. In fact, how can I articulate what sets it apart from other movies of the same genre? I'm not really sure.....which makes it even more brilliant in my eyes. I can tell you one thing that did it for me, but my description will be lame....you'll just have to experience it for yourself; and that is: the music. The music pulls you along until you're on the rollercoaster with these people. It's too much.....and you just want it to stop. Again....lame description. All I can say....is watch it. Trainspotting is definitely worth watching too, but it doesn't do to me what Requiem did.
Don't waste your time. Load of rubbish. How bout: Panic in Needle Park Reservoir Dogs Pulp Fiction The Dark Crystal
I don't consider them Film Noir. If so, Resevoir Dogs is one of my top 5 favorite movies. But I usually place them in the Cops n Robbers/Gangster Genre
Free Agent, which Steve Buscemi performance do you like better...Resevoir Dogs or Fargo. Which reminds me of my current favorite actor alongside Buscemi -- Forrest Whittaker, and Film Noir that he was in: The Crying Game
Barton Fink and The Man Who Wasn't There are both excellent, dark type films. Both by the Coen brothers, as well.
Some teasing, but no nudity. Bummer. It really helps to know the story of MacBeth to truly appreciate this movie. Brush up on it first. Good call on War of the Roses. Love that movie.
There's a dark comedy starring Cameron Diaz, Christian Slater and Ben Affleck (I think). Diaz and Affleck are to be married, so his buddy Slater takes him and a group of friends to LA for a party. I forget the title.
Ugh, I can't even impart how much I HATED that movie. Platoon is another great "dark" movie, especially if you've read "Heart of Darkness" on which it draws heavily. Apocalypse Now (already mentioned) is another that draws on the book in the Vietnam era.
No Affleck and they go to Vegas, but yeah, you got the gist of it right (assuming Very Bad Things is the movie to which you are referring). VERY VERY dark movie. I tell you what, though, if you hate b****y type characters, Cameron Diaz plays the worst kind in this movie, and she really gets hers in the end. That was worth it, to me.
