I'm not so sure about that. Melo would be perfect for the triangle offense. He's great at finishing around the rim. He can post or take you with his quick first step. He can also cut off the ball and make plays from the elbow. I do agree that PJ would hate coaching Amare. He's a below average rebounder and defender who doesn't like to use his size in the paint. Still, it would be a good fit for Phil because his offense doesn't require a good point guard. He's the one guy that could get the most out of that group.
LOL, you guys think Phil will coach a team that doesn't have arguably the best player in basketball on it? He's smarter than that.
Two superstars and a legit center and they are 2-4. And some people think if the Rockets get one superstar they will be contenders.
Barely, if Peirce would have played against them in the season opener they would be 1-5 now. I still think we'd be contenders with a superstar, the way things are looking McHale >>>>>>> D'Antoni, with the talent on his side.
The Knicks are 2-4 because they are a terribly run franchise. You don't need multiple superstars to win titles, you need one. You need a coaching system that caters to that player's talents and then solid role players everywhere else. Another allstar in the mix helps out in case of injury or to confuse the defense. New York got thier superstar (Carmello) which has pushed Amare into a roleplayer, which he is just awful at, and they have one role player in Chandler. Everyone else is garbage. They have a bad coach whose "system" does not cater to Carmello at all. They need a new coach and to trade Amare for role players.
The minute the Chandler signing was announced, I said it was a mistake because they needed a perimeter playmaker more than a presence at C. The Knicks roster is so unbalanced it cannot be salvaged even if they upgrade with a new coach. Chandler and Amare at $35MM/yr total have no business being on the same roster (especially with Melo maxed out at SF). The Knicks are stuck in mediocrity by those 3 huge salaries. Their only hope is to (1) trade Amare or (2) trade Chandler for a scoring floor general that can glue the team together. Without doing that, they can hire the best coach in the world and the 4th/5th seed is their ceiling. It's a shame after taking years to shed all of the salary Zeke buried them in, the Knicks hastily signed Tyson Chandler and returned to salary cap jail. I've been down on D'Antoni ever since he went there. If the Knicks don't put out on defense, the Chandler signing is even more of a waste. But he is not the only problem. Letting him go and promoting Mike Woodson will improve them but not to contender status. Lastly, I haven't forgotten about BD, but anyone who believes he is the solution is delusional.
I'm assuming the star Morey gets isn't a team-killing overrated chump like Carmelo Anthony. Of course, he could surprise me. After all, he's been swinging for guys like Chris Bosh and Nene.
Depends on the superstar. Melo & Amare are both overrated "superstars." Sort of like Chris Bosh. I think Dwight Howard/Lebron James/DWade/Nowitzki make this team an instant contender. Second tier stars would make us good enough to believe we are contenders, even though we wouldn't be in reality.
Since the Carmelo Anthony trade in Feb 2011, the Nuggets have had the 2nd best record in the league at 23-9...and the Knicks record has been 16-18........
Who's New York's pg again? Yeah.. It's one thing to get by without a pg if you have players that can create at other positions but the only one that can create their own shot on that team is Melo and he's not as good as advertised.
I guess the point I was trying to make was that having a superstar on the roster doesn't automatically make you a contender. It takes a combination of coaching, role players and star players to make a real contender. I think a lot of people around here think that if the Rockets can acquire a superstar that all our problems will be solved. Hakeem played for the Rockets a long time before he ever won a championship.
My friend was at the Raptors game, said you could hear D'antoni screaming when Melo shot that last three.
