I've only seen his standup a couple of times but I've never really found him that great. Well, to be fair (sorry halfbreed) telling someone that they only dislike someone because they're popular is about the same thing...and that is what Rocket G was responding to.
Hate Dane Cook all you want, I could care less about him. You can be the biggest Dane Cook hater and that wouldn't bother me one bit. What I posted had nothing to do with Dane Cook. It's about someone else enjoying something that you didn't like, and then you telling them that their taste sucks balls. We all have our personal opinions, I'm just saying you have no right to pass judgment just cause someone actually enjoys something you dislike. I'm so sorry I missed the memo on posting other thoughts in hate threads. I understand it all now. Everyone sucks balls because they like something that you hate. Got it.
Yes, halfbreed, that's the reason... That's why so many people think Dave Chappelle, George Carlin, Jerry Seinfeld, etc. suck... Yeah, sorry for the misunderstanding. You are right. Also sorry to Rockets G. The dood that said STFU was also in the same boat. I just really dislike people telling people that their tastes suck. Sorry I misunderstood.
No worries man - I shouldnt have told him his sense of humor was balls. I should have just repeated my opinion that Cook is balls. Comedy is very subjective - I mean every time a Mencia thread comes up it turns into a similar flamewar. I'm just really annoyed this guy has somehow become the media's comedy golden boy, and now they have this guy acting like some MLB cheerleader every 30 seconds. Media: "Oh look, it's Dane Cook! He's a clean cut white guy, but he occasionally cusses! He's edgy! Let's shove him down everyone's throat, including MLB fans!" I don't need Dane Cook to tell me to watch the freaking MLB playoffs.
AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH! He's on Spike now! Jesus ****! I can't even watch Ultimate Fighter without getting a break from him!
LOL...OK people...dont fight over my post I like some Dane Cook stuff, especially Vicious Circle but I dont care that much. I was just kidding and was responding with STFU cause that was in the thread subject You may proceed with the D.C. bashing
Ok, I admit, that I think he's a great actor, the movies he's made, Waiting and Employee of the Month are 2 of my favorite movies. I blind bought his HBO Vicious Circle on DVD, man that was horrible. His standup is borring as hell. As for Good Luck Chuck, it was "ok". If people thought Knocked Up was a chick flick, I fully agree this movie was. It was a chick flick with some of the funniest sex scenes imaginable. So in conclusion, I respect him as an actor one of my favs, he has that comedic "it" factor that I like in Ryan Reynolds, but his stand up acts just blows...
I guess I dont watch the channels that show this guy constantly, Ive never noticed him before....heard the name, but thats it. after watching a few clips so I could offer a opinion, I gotta say add another current comedy darling to my "Doesnt even cause me to crack a smile" list along with Seinfeld, the Office, South Park, and any SNL from the last fifteen years.
i also like waiting and employee of the month, but good luck chuck was just awful. alba from a couple years ago could have saved it, but she's lost so much weight.(still hot) cook doesn't get on my nerves but i don't really get his popularity either.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZ_710y4vR4 So how do you call this stealing? Maybe the ideas are similar but the jokes are not the same. Ok so the idea maybe stolen but Dane Cook tells it better.
If you mean the YouTube video, that wasn't Dane Cook... that was a guy on MadTV doing an impression of Dane Cook... though admittedly it wasn't too far off.
I like the justification at the end, "Okay so maybe that thief stole my car, but he drives it a lot better than me or my wife!"
I kind of agree, but I will say those examples were only similar on a general basis, at best, and that, I can say from being a writer, is common. In a sense, "originality" is never fully original. If I tell Person A a joke, and Person A finds it funny, chances are, he'll tell Person B the same joke, but it won't be exact. Then eventually, Person E will be telling an even funnier, more creative version of Person A's joke, which probably came from somewhere else. My writing ideas are combinations and ideas from other authors, television, everyday life, etc., that's how it is. Also, I saw a YouTube video that involved Carlos Mencia talking to a radio show host about the "Special Olympics" and it ends up that the host had heard of the idea a year earlier from some DJs and even took notes on it...so? Give me a break. Me and some friends thought of a competition very similar three years ago, and I'd be willing to be PLENTY of people have thought of something similar. Give me a break. Not saying I enjoy Dane Cook, or that I do or do not think he steals material, just pointing out that one should think deeper on the whole "material" stealing issue. Oh yeah, and to comment on the whole "I don't need to see Dane Cook telling me to watch the Playoffs" thing. That may be true, but it is an excellent advertising strategy, and to not do so would be utterly r****ded. I don't need George Clooney or Matt Damon to tell me to support AIDS funds or to not pirate movies, but by them doing so gives me a face I recognize, and with most people, a popular, well-liked face. It is an excellent tactic.
