Players can choose to leave if they want, no problem with that. But, as others have said, it was how James went about it that really rubbed people the wrong way. When was the last time a team scheduled a one hour special on ESPN to announce if and where a player was being traded? Teams don't torture players by creating media spectacle, they make every effort to handle it in a professional manner.

EXACTLY!!! Excellent post. This just shows the kind of classless guy Lebron is.

Yeah how dare he raise a big fuss and donate all the proceeds to charity? How dare he explain to fans about his decision process? How dare he say he loved his home, the Cavs, Dan Gilbert, and apologize to fans?

Actually I don't. I've lived in Houston most of my life, and i've been a Rockets fan for at least 17 years. I just hate it when people **** ride Lebron and act like he's a God.

This whole plan was concocted many years ago when they structured their deals to become FA at the same time. The "summit" was a meeting about the complete itinerary of events. Wade and Bosh commit on Wednesday and James puts on an overly exaggerated, attention w**** grabbing prime time TV show on Thursday proclaiming that his decision was last minute. Haha...BS.

I applaud Dan Gilbert. He doesn't owe anything to "Queen" James. He owes everything to his fans and that's what this letter represents.

You want to stay classy? Stop throwing powder in the air and getting it all over the announcers hair and eyes. When you lose a series go out and congratulate the winners, don't run away and hide in the locker room. Don't break into an elaborate dance or shimmy when your team is kicking the crap out of an opponent. Last but not least, be man enough to tell your team face to face that you will not be signing with them. Don't run off to an ESPN special Lebron James hour.

    F***, I NEED A BEER!

    Go Rockets!!! 2011 NBA CHAMPIONS!

I don't know, most of them aren't really mourning like North Koreans did for Kim Il-Sung...

You know I never could understand how James couldn't really persuade good free agents to come play with him. He's Lebron James! I let that sink and it's mind-boggling. I know the city is not ranked high in peoples' minds but do you think it's really that or something else? Do you think if they had gotten another star he would have had more success with recruiting? Or it wouldn't have changed?

Amen. Cleveland already has a problem attracting big-time talent...now you throw your former face of the franchise under the bus and run him over like this? Good luck attracting anyone else - I guess they can't ever decide to leave or this is how you'll respond. You had your chance...you make zero moves this summer and expect him to come back and go through the same boring story? He put your franchise on the map and made you a whole lot of money for 7 years - he doesn't owe you anything more.

Its ok. The Cavs probably will do a lot worse than the 09-10 nets for many years to come which means a lot of lottery picks. Maybe they can get another superstar like Lebron. I guess that's the bright side of Lebron leaving Cleveland.

So....if what Gilbert says is true and he felt Lebron "quit" on the team both this year and last year in the playoffs....

Why was he trying to keep the man so hard?

Seems like someone is very bitter and lashing out. Fans can do this yes. An NBA owner should use measured words and failing that really shut his pie hole until the emotion of the moment settles.

What Gilbert did might have felt good and satiated his fans tonight but he just made it that much more difficult to sign future FA's.

Lebron knew the magnitude of this decision...look what its done to this board alone. You know this is happening to every other bball board on ye ol' interwebs too...not to mention the media...it's a big event that will be talked about for a long time. Yeah he built it up unnecessarily, but there were a TON of people watching his telecast...no other star could've done something like this and had so many people give a crap. As much as people have their feelings hurt by this move it only adds to his exposure and legacy. Whether its good or bad, it still up's his value and watchability. People will have even more reason to watch 'what Lebron does next', because there will be more emotion involved.

He's a smart dude. He really worked the media and NBA fans into a frenzy. The league is better off when drama like this happens...well, maybe not for cleveland.
