A penetrator first wouldn't do a damn thing in this offense. The point's job is not to come in and set the table with the ball, penetrate and dish. His main responsibility is to handle the ball, get us into our sets, hit open shots, and be intelligent about spacing/swinging/late penetration when necessary. And DEFENSE. Sura isn't a "great defender". He's a solid defender at the 2 spot. At point, he's not quick enough. So your argument fails. We need a better defender at point--Dickau is not the answer at all. He'd be worse. T-Mac showed his awareness at times in Orlando. Plus he's a superstar, and you can rely on their skill sets to grow rapidly. Dickau's game isn't going to change that much, and he's not great with his court awareness or passing. And yes, Dickau should have shared the ball more. I'd rather see Magloire with the ball more, JR Smith when he was going off, PJ Brown. I should have seen George Lynch getting open J's from him. But instead I saw Dickau dribble around, down the baseline and back out..with nothing to show for it. All too often he didn't let enough people touch the ball. they weren't great players, but they aren't chumps.
Never said DD was a defender anywhere in my quote. I said he would learn to play as any other person would if they played for JVG This scares me. Yes. A point guard is to do all of those things. You are forgetting the last part of a point guards job. If the play breaks down, it is your job to improvise and be able to create a shot for yourself or your team mates. As a 12 year point guard, i know this well. Don't take this wrong as it is not meant to be, but, What scares me is your quote that penetration does nothing for this offense tells me either you've never played structured basketball or never watched these Rockets. The only player on our roster with the ability to do this is Tracy. Like speed in football, penetration kills. Your coach will stress you stop it on defense and do it on offense. When you get into the middle of the defense, 5 options open up to you immediately. If your not covered, you score. if you are, you have open teammates as the defense has to collapse to stop the defensive breakdown of penetration or offensive success depending on which way you look at it. This is basketball 101. this is why Phoenix has jumped up in wins by 40 plus games. They lost half their games when Nash was out this season. This is why the Rockets run the pick and roll so much. What is the pick and roll? It is penetration for teams with no penetrator. In the hands of a real point guard it is instant death. Ask any Phoenix opponent. Ask Jazz opponents when they had Stockton. Jason Kidd. Bibby. When the defense reacts to a breakdown, open easy shots occur.
Well put Mav-Hater. Dickau and James would be one bad ass/quick backcourt. Our guards MUST penetrate, and I dont think Sura can do that.
Thanks. Not trying to be hateful, just point out the benefits as it was beat into my head every day of practice. Get into the lane, Stop the penetratation. It's like a broken record I still hear in my sleep.
Only said he could penetrate and stick an open shot. Don't know who the answer is, but, he could be cheap and still be had after we blow our wad on the PF.
Overrated? He played for the WORST team in the league. Imagine the open shots he would get T-Mac/Yao. He is every bit as quick as James, and actually passes more then James. He basically knew the Hornets had no hope, so he tried to take over games. Im sure he wouldnt do that here with McGrady.
