Crazy. 1 good year and he gets 73M. Wonder what Nash thinks.

Exactly! I mean they wouldn't break the bank for Nash because of the "age" factor but they will for Dampier? huh? Isn't he around 30? So he will get 10M/per when he is 35, 36,37?

I like the signing of Dampier, but at that cost, it doesnt seem to jive with the reasons for letting Nash go.

Dallas would have been better off if they would have been able to keep Nash and THEN sign Dampier.

    Seriously.

He's had one good year, one average year and a bunch of mediocre years.

After that good year, in a contract year - he gets a SEVEN YEAR contract that pays 73 million dollars.

Maybe it's just me, but gosh, that seems like an awful amount of money to give to a guy. Add in Eschmeyer's horrid contract and the Mavs add a ton of future contracts in this deal - lose draft picks - and lose their big hustle, spark guy off the bench. If Damp can repeat last year's performance, it might be worth it, until about year three of the SEVEN YEAR deal - but what are the chances of that? How many free agents who were mediocre until their contract years, when they had breakout performances continued playing well after getting the big pay-day? How many didn't?

Poor Nash? He'll be raking in 66 million over the next 6 years. I think he'll be okay.

Nash is a very good GUARD!

Dampier is a good BIG MAN!

Last time I checked big men get paid (or over paid) more because .......well they are just big.

To me the big question is 'style'. Mavs' style of play has been beautiful and effective, often awesome. Difficult to prepare for -- during the season.

Now they'll be a pretty good squad with no rhythm. They'll be ok, but can Nellie coach this type team? is Nellie all but gone? Is Dull Harris or Donnie or someone else about to become head coach of the Dallas Cubes?

my guess is the style will be completely different and as a result Damp might be able to fit in on offense

without Nash the game plan can't be the same

Dirk will get his because he is one the greatest mismatches in NBA history.... less transition... doesn't really matter for Dirk, he will just score more in the half court

the style will be different, but still the Mavs should be able to score in a big way.... damn ... Dirk, Damp, Finley, Terry, Stack, Daniels, Howard, and Harris.... damn they will be able to score

the key change is with Damp in the middle they will be more likely to play some man on defense... Dirk will guard the weaker of opposition PF or Centres and Damp the other, the D will once again be the key

personally they are going to be interesting to watch, looking forward to the offensive stuff Nellie runs

but still wouldn't be surprised at all if they make a play for Kidd primarily and if he can't be had then Carter.....

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!

The Mavs are going down, man. Here's my take:

You don't have redundant players like Finley, Stackhouse and Jason Terry and those point guards if you are not stockpiling talent to pick up a marquee player like Kidd, or Vince Carter. If they keep all of these players around there is no way they will gel. Nash was able to keep everybody happy. I am not so sure about Daniels, or the new point being able to do that before quick trade McGraw and his Beatles haircut makes another move. At some point players will be reluctant to go there unless they are lured by a dumb-ass contract like Dampier got. Yo Cuban, don't worry about remembering the Alamo, remember the Knicks!
Here's my hope: Cuban unloads three, or four key pieces to pick up a hobbled Kidd who welds his cap space and roster flexibilty iron-shut. Then we get to see Jason Kidd limp up the court, play a two-man game with Erick "Joe Barry Carrol Without the Passion" Dampier and break the rims off the baskets at the American Airlines Center, or whatever they call it.

I agree, in theory. But I am not sold on Dampier (not at that price). Nash has proven himself over most of his career whereas Dampier only had one good season and a few average seasons.

Dallas is nothing to worry about, dampier = cato. Nash was the heart and soul of that team.

Dallas will have a totally different team. I would not be surprised if Dirk Nowitzki just tanks this year. Dirk is going to be asked to create offense for the team rather than have shots created for him.

Two guys whose departure will affect their team negatively:
    Steve Nash
    Vlade Divac

Basketball IQ epitomized each of these players, and they were the coach on the court who understood every play the coach wanted to run. Turnovers will become more prevalent due to the lack of a play-calling leader on the floor. Could Marquis Daniels take up the slack for Nash? He could, but he's a young player. Nelson runs some very complex offensive plays.

Dampier should thank Yao for tanking it bigtime in that late season matchup with the Warriors. Cuban gave Dampier more money because of the video Dampier's agent probably concocted with Dampier defending Yao.

your kidding right? Eschmeyer a back up ahead of Booth, Bradley and Pavel? Evan is a complete waist. Here is the pecking order in Dallas...

    Dampier
    Bradley
    Booth
    Pavel
    and...

Eshcmeyer who will likely be cut or spend most of if not the entire year on IR just like he did during his last stint with the Mavericks.

Well, they have their center and backup. Where's ours? Are we going to get Mutombo or some other scrub from FA?

Motumbo and Keon Clark would be better than anything behind the Mavs have behind Dampier.

I also forgot about D.J. whatever his last name is. The Mavs love him so far and he looked good against Yao earlier this summer. He may actually wind up as number 2 center.

The real concern of bayarea fans:
    [...]

    1320.16 in reply to 1320.14

    questions and comments:

    1) we loose DDavis's contract at 11MIL and Christians at 6Mil and Esh's contract (?) so where does that leave us under the salary cap??

    2) Do you think this gives us enough money to go after Yao?

Why did Steve Logan get traded in the mix? To even up salary issues?
