serious question Why do you think that is? (on a side note, I never see it said, but I dont read here near as much as I used to so I could be missing them) Could it be that the word is becoming more and more common in the rap/hiphop community and maybe some that werent rasied up when it was used in its original context frequently are starting to think it is ok cause they hear it in the popular music of today? I dont personally see/hear it used amongst the people I live around, but that might be because I live in a very racially mixed neighborhood.
trying to figure that out perhaps a bit of both people becoming too comfortable with the word black and white and other.. . . it HAS NOT lost all its power. . . .it is not a benign term Rocket River Rocket River
i don't get why black people use the N-word so frequently. you don't hear white people usin the word "honkey" or the phrase "white trash" in every rock song that makes the hit list. and then sometime you hear black people try to say that the ***** is different than the n-word with an "er" ending...but why the hell would you make a good word so close to something that is so racist and discriminatory? it's just stupid...and now trying to make a clothing label with the word on it...how's that supposed to end racism. every time a racist sees a black guy wearing that brand name there'd be an instant derogatory comment.
I don't know I don't think you can .. something are a scar on the human soul That word is like .. NAZI . . SATAN .. .. I don't think the negativity can be pulled out of it Rocket River
It is . . uhm. . . .self depreciating it is unfortunately though song. . .through lack of Ed. . . through socialization folx grow up with . . . All this taking the power back crap is a bunch of BS . . it is what it is. . . no justification . . .. I think it is a bunch of folx that know the word but DON'T KNOW IT . . . FEEL THE HISTORY they don't know OVERT Racism. . . Rocket River
You can't compare the two. Whites have never been in the position of blacks in this country so there can be no appropriation of hate language in an attempt to diminish it's power. I would say that, overall, that strategy has failed but that was the main reasoning behind the usage as term of endearment.
I've been watching In Living Color re-runs on BET and I have to agree with you. I don't think its too bad but a lot of their humor comes from making fun of negative stereotypes. the home boy shopping network, Frenchie, the guy in prison who tries to use words he doesn't understand, the two guys who always have some stupid scheme, it goes on and on and on.
