Here's some Bucks fans' opinions. http://www.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic.php?t=253275&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=12 Themes: good spot-up shooter can make fundamental passes, run alley-oops/pick&rolls likable; good lockerroom presence terrible defender mediocre to poor handles; can't handle the ball under pressure can't create his own shot trash talker/showboat At first I was completely set against Jones, but now I wouldn't mind giving him a shot if there's nothing better. Not a starting PG, however.
I personally think he's better in a fast paced run and gun offense (Bucks) than in a motion-oriented one (Kings) or a post oriented one (Rockets). He'd be a good player here under, say, Rudy, but not under JVG, IMHO.
i dont like the part about poor handles and cant handle the ball under pressure. We lost a few games because of pressure last season. This makes me not want jones. I say daniels or fisher.
offensively seems a reasonable fit but not sure defensively he is up to JVGs standards of acceptibility
I still maintain that regardless of age and contract, Eric Snow is still the best basketball player out of the available guys. I know his contract sucks. I know he can't shoot anything outside of 18 feet. But I also know that he plays with heart and brains, and unlike Fisher and Jones, he can actually run an offense. I know he's the best defender out there. I know he's the most respected player in the Sixers' lockerroom, and is an extension of the coach on the court. And I know that by trading for him we can save our MLE to split among some solid veterans, or make a gamble and try to pry Swift away from the Grizz.
Oy...just to clarify to you guys: When I say he's the most hated player on the team, I mean that he's hated by fans, not other players. If you don't believe me, go ahead ask some Milwaukee or Sacramento fans. For the most part, their emotions range from indifference to strong dislike. Even the few fans who like him believe that he lacks the skills necessary to be a starter. He's very streaky on offense. In the games I watched him play, he wasn't even trying on defense. As for his being a locker-room cancer, I read it in a newspaper article somewhere. I'll post a link if I can find it again. I don't have a personal vendetta against the guy. I'm just strongly against signing him as a starting PG. He'd make a decent backup, but we can do better at finding a starter. Mike James anyone? Antonio Daniels or Derek Fisher? I'd take Eric Snow over him as well.
If a guy is so shaky with the pill, how come so few to's against Detroit in the playoffs? Its like people want to pat him on the back and trash him all at once. We've had the explosive highlight to machine, so why not get the steady guy to get you in the offense. If Francuis knew how to run pick and roll, he could have had 20ppg on about 45% fg easily. His problem is he doesn't set the pick up nor does he exploit what is given. He would rather yo-yo the ball.
It is quite possible the guy just finally figured out his role in the NBA. A lot of guys Elie, Bowen etc., became good role players in their late 20s. For a decent contract I'd say bring him in. We have Lue for the quicker, smaller, more traditional PG. A Lue/Jones platoon would be far from the worst PG situation a Rocket's contender has had.
I agree... 93-95: Kenny Smith, Sam Cassell (way before his prime) 96-97: Matt Maloney, Brent Price (ugh)
so the board was down due to traffic so i figured there was a deal announced. maybe i missed it but i don't see any news today. i did scope out espn's msg. board and a guy there is claiming that we're getting Damon Jones! Might be false but I figured that's why CF was down. http://forums.espn.go.com/espn/thread?threadID=209077
This reminds me a lot of the Chauncey Billups deal. Hoping a matured player will finally start playing up to his potential.
Several teams hoped that Chauncy Billups had matured and gave up on him. Also, how many other "Chauncy Billups" are out there who never matured. It's like trying to predict which stock is going to triple in price right before it happens. If it were that easy, everybody'd be doing it. If you try to hit a Chauncy Billups-type homerun every time, you'll fail 95% of the time.
It's not a coincidence that Billups got his act together under Carlisle and Larry Brown. Like Van Gundy, they are Disciples of Discipline. No problem with Jones that JVG can't fix (i.e. defense).
you know what? i believe that guy on ESPN saying he talked to jones and that he has already agreed to a contract, i was listening to matt jackson tonight on sports radio 610 and he was talking about the rockets pg situation and he sounded confident it would be done in a few days and he sounded like he was holding something back
