    because I believe they aren't analogous, how many times do I have to say it. question, what kind of suffering do gays experience on a day to day basis, sanctioned by the government?

    like forcing their kids to inferior schools, forcing them to the back of the bus, etc.

    I've been told before that one of the reasons blacks dislike the comparison is because while they were fighting for the right to not get lynched, gays are fighting for the right to be as overprivilged as the rest of society. a little over the top probably, but I see their point.

    I just don't think people truly understand, and I probably don't truly understand either because I wasn't there, what life truly was like for a black person in the south.

    people don't understand what's it like to truly be a second class citizen in all facets of life. to have to submit yourself to a whole other race everyday. I don't think any of us can truly comprehend it.

    When I questioned my sister on this (she's gay and her girlfriend is active in gay rights protests), we finally came down to the fact that the only instances of "government sanctioned" discrimination against gays are the military, and the fact that there is no provision for divorce, so break-ups in long-time partnerships are messy.

    Mostly illegal. It exists, but it's not "government sanctioned". And it certainly isn't holding gays down as a group, as they make more money than the population as a whole.

    Not enforced. Coming off the books right and left.

    where did he make the analogy. again, no one is arguing that gay people aren't discriminated against.

    how is that. its the whole point of my argument, the level of how the two issues discrimination affect each group isn't in the same ballpark. therefore the movements aren't in the ballpark. the fights aren't nearly the same, starting off with the basis of what they are fighting for.

    blacks were fighting to live a normal life. not to be second class citizens.

    In which case, why are you arguing that the movements aren't analogous in this respect?

    It was never the point of mine. I never tried to argue that the discimination level or amount of suffering was somehow equal. That was just you putting words in my mouth.
