Carmelo Anthony is open to signing an extension with the Mavericks, according to a source.

Dallas has a roster already capable of winning a title, but they have a need at small forward.

"The only way Melo doesn't come to New York is if [Mark] Cuban makes a play," that source said.

Roddy Beaubois is the main player of interest Dallas could use in a major trade, but he is close to untouchable.

A source with knowledge of the Mavericks' thinking said he'd "be shocked if [Carmelo] came" to Dallas, but did say Cuban is unpredictable.

I hope Melo understands that Dallas is cursed to win a title.

I won't read too much into it, given that Carmelo does want to go to New York, and I don't know if Cuban actually has the parts to play spoiler in all this. But it becomes clear in these situations that superstars tend to want to stand next to other superstars, especially with your Bostons and your Miamis with their 3 All-Stars-per-team thing going on.

It makes it a little tougher for Daryl Morey to be the spokesperson for the "little engine that could" team.

At the same time, Denver will likely deal Carmelo out of conference or somehow force him to stay. Still can't help but think New Jersey is somewhere in the mix, but keeping it quiet.

Dallas would be really dumb to say no to adding Melo simply because they don't want to trade Beaubois.

    Why is Roddy Beaubois untouchable?

all smoke and mirrors. Rockets are out because we want Denver and Melo to feel pressure to get something done. We either want to acquire Melo or for the Melo trade to go down in enough time for us to turn other deals after the Melo domino falls. Denver and Melo are tying up the whole trade market. If they drag out to the last hour of the deadline, that severely limits Morey's and every other GM's range of trading options.

Why I want Cuban to buy the Stros... This man will do whatever it takes to get players on the team.. Even if he loses, loses money on tax, etc... Your worth billions of dollars and paying a mere 10-30 million in luxury tax will only tickle.

But DM the GM is still in for his #1 target, Nene. When Melo goes (Dolan/Zeke will 'win' the day) Nene will be a Rock.

Do you think Nene is a legitimate C or just a big PF playing out of position?

He wouldn't be the "shotblocking" presence that everyone wants.

Nice to have a superstar, huh? Melo is going to NY, he MIGHT consider an extension in Dallas but it's a LONG SHOT...it's NY or bust.
