Oh man. In the paper today, Redding and Williams were complaining about the crowd cheering when the Cub scores were posted on the scoreboard. Seems like Wagner and Redding/Williams aren't on the same page.
http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/sports/2121337 Here is an excerpt from another article: Bad timing Many of the Astros were upset at the distraction caused by the fans' cheering when scoring updates from Thursday's game between the Cubs and Reds were posted on the scoreboards in left field. No sooner had six runs been posted in the Reds' sixth inning did the fans go wild during the windup of Astros pitcher Tim Redding, who surrendered a home run to the Brewers' Richie Sexson moments later. "You get two strikes on a hitter and the crowd is cheering for you, you kind of get used to that," Redding said. "When you're just throwing the second pitch of the sequence and the crowd is going wild you don't know what's going on." The final score -- Reds 9, Cubs 7 -- was posted in the eighth inning when Octavio Dotel was on the mound, again whipping the fans into a frenzy. "I was like, `What's going on here?' " Dotel said. "I was happy, but I had to control myself and do what I have to do." Astros manager Jimy Williams had someone contact stadium officials to correct the problem. "We called and asked them to stop doing what they were doing in the middle of a guy's windup," Williams said. "It's OK to wait until the inning's over. They really didn't listen. I guess we have to go to higher authorities. "Listen, we have great fans and want to have what happened in that (Cubs-Reds) game, but whoever was handling that particular situation is going to have to do a better job."
really sounds like more criticism for the guy in charge of posting the scores than it does for the fans.
Max, I see where you are going with that. Yes, they are complaining about the scoreboard operator, but only because they find the crowd cheering distracting. I am sure it has more to do with Redding's psyche than anything else. But heck, this ain't golf and it ain't the symphony. Maybe Jimi should get himself a conductor's wand and tap on the dogout railing when he wants the crowd to be quiet. Makes me think that Redding's life as a little leaguer went something like this: Redding is on the mound pitching. The opposing team breaks out the "we want a pitcher, not a belly itcher" chatter. Redding breaks down on the mound. "Stop it!!! Yall are messing with my head man!!! Lalalala I can't hear you!!!"
I agree with the 'Stros, there's no reason why they can't post score changes between ABs & between innings...having 30K people spontaneously erupt in applause can be a tad bit unnerving when it's unexpected, especially in the middle of his freakin' windup.
Billy went on AM 610 in houston and said we shouldn't be in the playoff race. Wagner might want to hire a publicist who can coach him on how to handle the media because it was laughable. I immediately took it off 610 at that point. That same night he backed up his words by allowing 3 runs on two homeruns in the 9th vs SF. And of course I was there to witness it.
I agree with Wags, but not from a baseball standpoint...Just look at all the Rox home games...The crowd doesn't get into it, but I expcect that to change in the TC... BTW, Houston is a Football town...
yeah...people really should spend more on the third most expensive ticket in the NBA to watch a team that can't finish among the top 8 in its conference for 4 consecutive years. i don't know what they're thinking!
I didn't hear him say that this morning, but I saw him say it earlier this week on Fox Sports Southwest. We might be digging a little too deep on this one. I interpreted it as Billy talking about how the team has overachieved this year. He was talking about how no one picked the 'Stros to do anything this year, but here they are despite all the critics. The "we shouldn't be here" quote was taken a little out of context. That said, Billy should keep his arm strong and his mouth shut.
rm95, He sounded serious billy like, off the cuff. MadMax, Yes he said that. It was not in jest. I don't care what his point was, you don't say that. I don't want him in houston next year. He was just speaking his mind as usual, and I'm sick of his crap. He always talks negative like he doesn't believe we can do anything, and he backs it up come crunch time because he only has confidence in his heater. Finally, whether you believe it or not, do not go to the media and say crap like that when you are in the playoff race.
agreed...i also don't understand the concept of showing up to speak to the media on the last game of the season to tell them you think you'll be traded. what's the point in that? i liked billy better when he was pitching more and talking less.
