I don't believe that. They floated him on the waiver wire and at that time if someone would have stepped up and claimed him, they would have let him go for nothing just to get out from under the big money. Manny's market is the Yankees and Mets........the Yankees because they have bottomless pockets, the Mets because they are fiscally irresponsible. If Boston is gonna be able to get rid of him for major talent, they are gonna have to eat a lot of his contract. If they don't eat his contract, they won't be able to get anything for him, unless they can get the Mets to send them Beltran. They're not gonna trade him to the Yankees.

 

With our left field, he would be more than adequate. The guy isnt THAT bad. Ive been to some Red Sox games out here and people definitely like to slam him for his defense. They overrate how bad he is out there.

Regarding his bat, he will definitely win you more games with his offense than he will lose you with his defense. The guy is an absolute monster at the plate. Very few players in baseball are at his level; Bonds and Pujols come to mind.

 

Then I wished the Astros were still playing.

 

How bad would people feel about Manny for Bagwell and Lidge straight up? Not nearly as good as the Abreu for Qualls/Backe rumor that was going around. Manny being 2 years older than Abreu of course and with a heck of a contract. 06/20m, 07/18m, 08/20m. Ouch.

Btw, is Bagwell really owed 27mil this season? 10m deferred plus 17m salary. Yikes!

I really doubt the Red Sox would even want Bagwell in return... there's too much salary issues there, and they've already got a set DH in Ortiz.

 

Of course they wouldn't want Bagwell in return. Who would since he has negative trade value. The idea here is to balance out a Manny for Lidge trade in both salary and value. Manny for Lidge straight up would be stupid for the Astros to do, but letting Bags go along evens it out.

Btw since the salaries would be a wash this leaves some room to add some FA's. ie. Molina, pitching etc.

Not for nothing.....but there is a LOT happening at these meetings in terms of trades and Purp hasn't done a damn thing. Its all cozy and fun to talk about this report or that report but now that the Clemens thing is resolved, we need to start moving on something. I hope this guy knows what he's doing.

 

Does Dalati have access to the team's inner circle moreso than a guy like Gammons or Stark? (or Justice for that matter) I'm just curious to know why he is the only one with this big scoop.

 

Just because a trade hasn't been made doesn't mean he hasn't done a damn thing. We've obviously been in discussions with teams and we made a nice offer to Burnett.

Stop proposing trades that involve Bagwel!

The dude gets paid way too much, and his arm is jell-o - Nobody wants to absorb that.

 

I wish he would just hang em up.....lets say we land a guy like Manny for arguments sake....or even Preston Wilson....does that mean Lane sits if bags decides he wants to play?

 

The last trade discussion involving Manny was Abreu-for-Manny. The Red Sox, if they trade him, are going to get value for him. If not, they'll keep him. Remember - it's not the Red Sox that want to trade him right now. It's Manny that's asking for a trade.

As for the waivers - again, virtually every player in the majors is floated on the majors. We did it with Clemens, Bagwell, etc, etc. No one claimed him because no one just has $20MM in random payroll flexibility sitting there. It's much better to make a trade where you can dump some salary too.

 

The problem with this year's FA and trade market is that it sucks.

I saw a disgruntled Alfonso Soriano who was dumped because he refused to play OF. Also, the Marlins dumped an overpaid Carlos Delgado and a underperforming Luis Castillo. I'll give you that Josh Beckett was a marquee player, but when packaged with Mike Lowell, most teams backed off.
