The Red Sox are almost assured of having to pay a little of that contract in any deal they make... they want to get rid of him that badly. The Phillies, on the other hand, could survive another year of Abreu... thus, they want to make another team absorb his contract before giving up on him.

Couple of bits from Ken Rosenthal, semi-unrelated...

The Braves and Red Sox met three times on Tuesday. If the Braves acquired Renteria, they likely would move second baseman Marcus Giles into the leadoff spot. The Braves were rebuffed in an effort to land Indians outfielder Coco Crisp, who could have filled the leadoff role. They also made an ill-fated attempt to acquire Astros shortstop Adam Everett.
    ...
The Yankees, who continue to explore deals for every center fielder on the planet, inquired about the Astros' Willy Taveras. The Astros said they were not interested.

More bits from around the league are in there, those are just the Stros related.

I read on ESPN how the Red Sox aren't getting as many acceptable offers as they would hope for Manny. Honestly, Boston is dumb for even trying to make Manny's wish come true. Especially if they're entertaining any offers from Anaheim as reported.

It would be a pretty nice batting order though. Having Ensberg/Berkman/Manny as your 3-4-5 hitters.

#$%* me! The Braves can have Everett for a AA pitcher and a sack of balls. I'd rather see Bruntlett out there.

I think the Houston club house is one of the few in the league where a "big ego" learns to ride the pine... as in, they check it at the door. Look at Carl Everett, he was a stand up guy when he was here... I think Biggio and Bagwell just breathe class, and other players know it.

I understand that, but some team would offer a package of top prospects that would easily beat our cheap relievers offer.

Yeah, a lot of whack jobs have passed through here during the Killer B era without incident - Derek Bell, Chuckie Carr, and Jeff Kent come to mind.

Sh*t, contrary to earlier reports, Willis and Cabrera are on the market. *Salivates*

Am I nuts that I would rather have a 22 year old Miguel Cabrera than the 34 year old Ramirez?

It will be such a letdown if they don't come away with one of Zito, Ramirez, Willis, Abreu, and Cabrera.

yea the lack of media coverage combined with a low pressure and more laid back atmosphere with veterans that command respect really takes out the knucklehead nature of many players who have gone through houston.

If we can get manny or abreu, I'm down with that.

Bagwell could be the Sox' owner's son, he's not going anywhere. Noone is taking on that contract.

No kidding. Cabrera is a bona fide stud who comes cheap for a couple more years I believe.

But I would hate to be the GM who has to pull that trigger.

Man, I would give up a crap load for Cabrera. I'm talking about deals including both Troy Patton and Hunter Pence.

He's like a young Albert Pujols (which is a testament to Pujols considering he's only 25). He hit .323 last year with 33 bombs, and 116 RBI's. On second thought, I'm not nuts. I would steer all attention away from Manny and go hard after this guy. Give them Troy Patton too - Cabrera is only 22.

Looks like Cabrera will stay with the Marlins.

Marlins deal Pierre to Cubs for three pitchersAssociated Press

DALLAS -- The Florida Marlins likely finished their salary purge on Wednesday, sending center fielder Juan Pierre to the Chicago Cubs for right-hander Sergio Mitre and Double-A pitchers Ricky Nolasco and Renyel Pinto.

    Marlins' 2005 Opening Day Lineup
    CF Juan Pierre -- traded
    2B Luis Castillo -- traded
LF Miguel Cabrera -- moved to 3B
    1B Carlos Delgado -- traded
    3B Mike Lowell -- traded
C Paul Lo Duca -- traded
    RF Juan Encarnacion -- FA
    SS Alex Gonzalez -- FA
    P Josh Beckett -- traded

The only high-priced players remaining on the Marlins roster are 22-game winner Dontrelle Willis and slugger Miguel Cabrera, who are eligible for salary arbitration for the first time but not expected to be traded. Pierre is eligible for salary arbitration and expected to make $5 million to $6 million in 2006.

"I can guarantee you that Miguel Cabrera will be in the lineup," new Marlins manager Joe Girardi said. "Other than that, there aren't a whole lot of guarantees."
