well, it seems there's still some debate about what the bill actually says, even w/in Congress- seems like we ought to at least gain a consensus on the intent of the bill, and craft language that supports that intent, and then make those responsible read the damn thing before voting on it, and signing it into law.

Health Care: Last week we said the reform plan moving through the House essentially outlaws the private individual medical insurance market. Critics said we were being dishonest. But we're standing by our story.

When we received a copy of the House's 1,018-page health care reform legislation, it didn't take us long to find a passage that made us wince. On Page 16, the language indicated to us that once the bill became law, insurers would no longer be permitted to sell new private individual coverage. While we were expecting the worst out of this legislation, we really didn't anticipate anything quite so radical. Had we simply misread the bill?

Not fully trusting our own interpretation, we asked for confirmation from the House Ways and Means Committee. Sources there agreed: The bill would indeed shut down the individual private health care insurance market.

Our impression was further confirmed Monday when Rep. Dave Camp, the ranking member on Ways and Means, told us that "any existing plan will not be able to enroll members." There will be "a prohibition," the Michigan Republican said, "on enrolling individuals in private health plans" after the bill becomes law in 2013.

It was also confirmed by Ways and Means staff director Cybele Bjorklund, who, in response to questions from Republican Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin during a committee markup session, admitted last week that insurance providers "cannot create new policies outside of that window outside of the exchange."

Many of those who have said we are wrong pointed to this health care exchange mentioned by Bjorklund as evidence.

But the exchange will not be a private market. It will be a program in which Americans can buy individual plans from private companies in competition with the "public option" provision of the bill that will provide taxpayer-subsidized coverage.

But that's only part of the story. The exchange will be a highly regulated clearinghouse of providers that meet the government's standards. Only those providers that follow Washington's stringent guidelines will be allowed to join this exclusive club.

The government, through an unelected health choices commissioner, will set premiums, dictate benefits, determine deductibles and establish coverage. Exchange participants will be required to insure anyone who asks to be covered and to accept all renewals. Ryan believes the weight of the mandates will mean only five or six providers will be able to survive and sell coverage in the exchange.[/rquoter]

Once again, you don't know what you are even quoting.

This is for individual insurance sold directly to people - not through their employers. Currently, health insurance companies sell about 10 million of these policies a year, and while it is a growing market, only 7 of the major carriers are in it.

This is an area with a lot of problems, with insurers trying to charge as much as $5000 a month for a policy, and often able to weasel their way out of claims on what's seen as nitpicking. A lot of people are getting screwed and it needs to be regulated better.

The conclusions that this will limit who can enter or that somehow protecting consumers and not allowing discrimination is really terrible or equal to socializing medicine is just ridiculous.

Just as Car Insurance which is sold directly to consumers, health insurance sold directly to consumers needs regulation. Why are you against protection people from being taken advantage of?

I dont get what's confusing about it at all. That article simplified it even more. Should the bill pass, any new insurance that is issued by private corporations must meet a new set of regulations.

On a side note, I personally am more of a fan of the French national health insurance system which does a much better job of incorporating private insurance companies into the system. Additionally it does a far superior job than any other system in the world at controlling health care prices which is the biggest issue of all. (and they do it without capping doctor pay) The French system is probably the best example of a hybrid of government health care and the free market.

Obama will be part of the reason why America is not highly regarded by its citizens in the future.. no one will find pride in volunteering to join the army/navy/etc.

Just get yours and rep your county, city at best.

You really are a tool. The previous posters beat me to it, but I'll go ahead and point out that the quotes you highlight are from a Ranking Member (which means "Republican" on a key committee necessary for the passage of HC reform. We know the Repubs are trying to kill it (Obama's Waterloo) and any quote from a Repub, particularly the Ranking Member of the House Ways and Means Committee should not be taken at face value. And I'm shocked that your source would go to the Minority to ask for clarification and then moisrepresent what a staffer was talking about. This article reeks of ignorance, and it is not the usual intentional ignorance one finds on the Right. It really is sheer ignorance of the subject matter, yet of course, they still try to spin that ignorance in their favor.

No, you're one of the reasons people like me have issues with our country these days. Get an education, think for yourself, and reach your potential.

obama sounded sharp last night and definitely sounded familiar with the health care bill; another swing and miss for the fringe republicans.

On the contrary, I think your posts are abysmal and there are less than 20 people in the country that can do my job. There are lots of true things you can say about me, but that's not one of them.
